Mosaic Workshop for Beginners

Two day introduction to mosaics in the heart of Kyneton

2 x 5 hours Class size 8 to 10 guests

$240 ($245 per guest when you book for 8+ guests, $240/guest for 8+ guests)

Come along to our custom-built studio, in our historic precinct and try your hand at making a mosaic wall plaque to take home!
You will be shown how to transfer your chosen design from paper to your substrate, then we will choose your colours, paying attention to the textures, opacity and how to manage negative and positive spaces in your design. You will be shown how to achieve different effects using different shapes, sizes, textures and materials to create depth and interest in their works. There will be some mosaic glass tiles and broken porcelain to help create accents in your design as well.
You will be guided through how to shape your glass using mosaic nippers. Once you have your design and colour scheme sorted you will be ready to start attaching it to your substrate. Using the direct method we will start creating your mosaic, once you have your main features down we will work with you to fill in the gaps and make sure your positive and negative space is well balanced. You should finish glueing down your mosaic by the end of Saturday.
On Sunday once your glue has set overnight we will show you how to grout and then clean your mosaic ready to take home! The grout takes 1-2 weeks to fully cure, then it can be displayed outside on a wall with pride!
Lunch will be provided on the first day using all local organic produce and cater for any dietary requirements you may have. Tea and coffee facilities are available throughout the course.
The class will run on a Saturday and Sunday to allow for drying time between processes. We anticipate that you will be completed in time to check out one of our great local cafes for a late lunch on Sunday.
Session 1: 10:30am- 3:30pm Saturday (includes break for lunch with catering provided)
Session 2: 10:30am - 12.30pm or until your project is finished on Sunday (some participants may finish their projects earlier)

  • 5/5 from Katy Penman, attended May 2026: Loved it, excellent materials, got straight into it, as much info as we needed, but not a huge amount of talking, just making. It was unreal! Setting was inspiring in the Old Auction House and lunch was delish. I love what I made and everyone's mosaic were unique and awesome. A thoroughly wonderful weekend!
  • 3/5 from Deborah Showers, attended May 2026: The overview of the workshop was not accurate. I attended based on this information.
  • 5/5 from Clare, attended Aug 2025: Everything was done well. The instructors were very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I enjoyed seeing the finished product the most. Only improvement suggestion is to have written on the information page &/or confirmation email that there are 5 designs to choose from for the class and you won’t be doing your own design. I spent unnecessary time leading up to the workshop researching what I would like on my mosaic.
  • 5/5 from Emma Hoskins, attended Aug 2025: A mosaic class has been on my bucket list for ages and I'm so glad I chose The Old Auction House! It was so good to meet people learning a new craft technique at the same time and Rhain, our teacher, was very supportive. The venue is brilliant, lunch was yummy and the range of materials we got to work with was amazing. I was so pleased with the end result and can't wait to start making my own mosaic creations at home.

As well as learning a new skill, I discovered Kyneton. I felt the teaching was just right. Allowed us the freedom to do things but guidance and help as needed. I feel well prepared to have a go myself.
