All Day Eco-Printing Workshop

Learn to print on both paper and Silk in the Macedon Ranges

5 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests

  $230 - $235 ($235 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $230/guest for 2+ guests)

Step into the magical world of eco-printing and discover how simple spontaneous leaf prints can be created using locally gathered plants, mordants and common metals.
This workshop will give you an introduction to eco-printing where you learn the basic techniques and discover what is possible, ready to go home and continue your dying experiments. The workshop will include printing on paper and each participant will have their own paper prints and silk scarf to take home at the end.
You will be taken through the whole process of eco-dyeing with demonstrations and hands-on experience of techniques, examples of different effects that can be created, and plenty of scope to start from basic techniques and then trial different plants, metals, and wrapping techniques.
While we wait for our prints to develop, you will have a delicious locally sourced lunch and a coffee to keep you going throughout the day! During this time, we'll discuss the various properties and types of papers that can be used for dyeing.
All materials, tools, and a variety of plants sustainably and mindfully collected from around the Macedon Ranges are provided, but anyone who has a favourite plant in their garden that they wish to trial is more than welcome to bring it along (dried or fresh).
What you'll get
Your eco-printed papers your own eco-dyed silk scarf as well as a lovely day out!

Janet was very informative, witty and had a great sense of humour. Lunch was supplied, which was delicious along with a tasty choice of food laid out for afternoon tea. The Old Auction House itself was humming with the thrive of activity as eager creatives were about to embark into their chosen workshops. Along with people browsing the wide selection of artists creations and art supplies that were on offer to purchase. To top it off my Eco printing turned out wonderful. Such a wonderful experience.

  • 3/5 from Karen Anne Johnston, attended Jul 2025: Disappointing, due to Poor time management, we didn’t get to finish the scarf, had to finish scarf process at home. 20 minute introduction could have taken place during lunch. Very expensive considering most of the products were free from garden and paper donated. Lunch was disappointing as the quiche was so full of mushrooms l couldn’t eat any of it, I don’t like mushrooms, I tried to pick them out, but there were more mushrooms in it than egg.

Our tutor Janet and her “side kick” husband delivered a marvellous class of teaching us about Eco printing. Despite family worries, Janet powered on and was an inspirational tutor, helped by ready available recourses. I learned a lot about what I wanted to learn about, also invigorated by like minded people! Art is invaluable and a life necessity to keep our mind healthy and sound! Thank you again for this great art space and the driving forces behind it!

If there's a future, advanced workshop I'll be there. What I learnt will be a great asset to my own work. I haven't as yet, taken photos of the work we did but happy to, when it's dry. The venue is great airy, spacious and well thought out. I will encourage others to take this little course with enthusiasm. Thank you Janet, Rhain and Jo!

Janet wears many hats but 'crazy scientist' is by far her favourite! Janet is a scientist, teacher, published author and artist based in the Macedon Ranges and loves showing the amazing results at the intersection of Art and Science!

When she is not wrangling her primary school she can be found exploring and nurturing her 10 acres with her family in Woodend or creating in the studio pushing boundaries and frequently asking the questions 'why' and 'why not'.
Janet loves teaching adults and children and believes it's never too early or too late to try something new!
