Ever wondered what it would be like to shape and blow molten glass? Well, here's your chance! This glass blowing class in Tasmania is perfect for beginners as you learn in a one-on-one purpose-built environment.During this exciting introductory hands-on workshop, you'll gather molten glass from the furnace on a steel blow-pipe and learn to control and shape the glass using traditional techniques and tools to create solid and blown forms such as paperweights and simple drinking vessels or bowls. You can bring your own creative flair to the design of your glass by incorporating colours and patterns of your own choice, working on simple yet effective designs with the help of a skilled glassmaker with over 20 years of teaching experience.Unlike smaller-scale forms of glass blowing which involve working with glass tubes and rods over a gas flame (known as flame-working or lamp-working), this form of glassmaking involves working with the material in its molten form, gathered like honey from a large crucible inside an 1150 degree furnace. The first part of each class is spent orientating to the studio and its equipment before starting to work with the molten glass to create some awesome coloured paperweights. After having got a handle on gathering and tooling the glass you’ll soon move on to learning how to blow a bubble into the glass and discover how to form your glass bubbles into small tumblers or other small free-form vessels.Once again you'll be able to add colour to your pieces and, while your hot glass creations will be a little funky to start with, you'll be amazed at the progress you'll make over the period of the workshop. You'll be guided each step of the way by an experienced glass artist in a one-on-one capacity, who can also step in to help you with some of the more difficult parts of the process as your skills develop. All the glass you make will be yours to take home and show off to your friends and family - fascinating mementoes that will no doubt spark off some great story-telling!This half-day workshop for one person can be expanded to a full-day workshop for two people on request (dependent on availability). Please note:
Deposits/fees will be fully refunded if classes are cancelled by the studio for any reason.
All the glass pieces you make will need to cool down in a kiln overnight. These will be available for pick-up the following afternoon, however, postage can be arranged if necessary (at extra cost).
A range of discounted overnight accommodation options are available to workshop participants by contacting the Poatina Chalet.
Poatina Arts also offer an introductory Paperweight Making Workshop that can be a good alternative starting point for those who wish to have a smaller taste of working with hot glass. Our paperweight workshops are more adaptable to groups and families, including younger age groups.

Recent reviews of Beginner's Glassblowing Class for One: Private Half-Day
5/5 from Amanda Rosato, attended Feb 2025: Keith is so patient and excellent at teaching and explaining. I had a wonderful time and felt totally relaxed and supported. Highly recommended.
5/5 from Kathleen 0419548578), attended Mar 2023: WOW, what an experience! My family kindly gifted me this class as a birthday present. I went along knowing very little of what this class would involve and what I could achieve. I never expected that within an hour of arriving, I would have the tools in my hands and be starting to work with molten glass under the guidance of my teacher. Keith has a very calming nature and explains all the processes well. His experience and commitment to his craft is obvious as he’s encouraging and supportive through every step. The projects that you complete all have a purpose, helping you to learn and reinforce the fundamental skills and techniques used in glass blowing. My family were able to watch and photograph me work and even participated by twisting and manipulating the coloured glass through my paper weight. I loved the fact that I was able to keep what I had created, it’s such a beautiful way to remember and reflect on such a unique experience. Thank you Keith
5/5 from Kathryn Gregory, attended Mar 2023: Keith was just brilliant, he was patient and made me feel confident. I can’t believe I got to make 5 pieces, I can’t wait to pick them up tomorrow. It was an incredible experience, even better than I imagined. I will definitely book again. Thanks so much Keith.
5/5 from Mary Wood, attended Aug 2021: Keith had a calm demeanour which was very helpful when the pressure was on! He was able to adjust his supports to accommodate us. The three items we made were an excellent progression in skill learning, so nothing ever felt "too hard" and we each have three beautiful creations to show for our afternoon! It was well paced and very enjoyable!
5/5 from Kyra Wood, attended Aug 2021: This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Keith was an excellent teacher; friendly, calm, professional, and a great mix of hands on and hands off support throughout the class. The venue, equipment and materials were all neatly laid out and the lesson was organised and proceeded without incident (which is a plus when handling molten glass!) I’d highly recommend this class to anyone… I walked in with burning curiosity and walked away with an even deeper curiosity and appreciation for the skill, dedication and artistry of glass blowing… as well as a beautiful new whisky glass, a colourful paperweight and somewhat wonky caterpillar all made by me… what a joy! Thanks Keith.
