What you'll do
Get in touch with your creative side with this brush lettering class in Brisbane. In this course, you'll learn about the tools and basics of brush lettering through hands-on practice and walk away feeling proud of your new skills, special card creation and inspired to make more brush lettering art!
It doesn't matter if you've got messy handwriting or have never done calligraphy before. This 2 hour workshop is for complete beginners and makes a fantastic activity if you're looking for something fun to do on the weekend as a family, with friends or even solo.
During this practical brush lettering class, calligrapher Zhao will teach you all the fundamentals of brush lettering including:
- How to hold the pen and position your paper
- Basic lettering strokes
- Lowercase letters
- Connecting letters
- Overview of uppercase letters
There will be time at the end of the class to put your new skills to use and create a beautiful card to take home and give to someone special!

No, brush lettering is actually different to regular handwriting - everyone can learn brush lettering regardless of what their handwriting looks like!
2. Is this suitable for left handers?
Yes, the workshop is suitable for left and right handers.

I’m Zhao (pronounced like “jow”). I am a part-time speech pathologist and part-time left-handed calligrapher specialising in brush lettering and Copperplate calligraphy. I live in Brisbane with my husband and 2 cats. I love coffee, chocolate and, of course, calligraphy!
My love for all things paper and ink stems from childhood hours spent creating projects for my family and friends. In 2018, wanting my wedding to be truly unique, I learnt calligraphy so that I could create custom details for my wedding, which I still keep and cherish today.
Being a speech pathologist for many years, I love teaching others and have worked with people of all ages! I decided to combine my experience in teaching with my passion for calligraphy to share the magic and joy of paper and ink, so that you, too, can connect with the creativity, mindfulness and beauty of calligraphy.
