Sink your hands into clay and make unique ceramics with The Art Department in Newcastle!

Get your hands dirty and unleash your inner artist. Our hand-building class is the perfect combination of art and socialising. Led by our professional pottery teachers, you'll learn fun and unique techniques while having the opportunity to relax, get messy, and connect with others in our open and friendly environment. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned artist, the only thing you need to bring is your imagination and creative spirit.‍

We provide you with everything you need to have a great time, including all the clay and tools. And to make things extra enjoyable, we encourage you to bring your favourite snacks and beverage of choice to keep the inspiration flowing.

Mezze boards are available as an add-on at the checkout screen.

If you'd like to add a special touch to your finished piece with glazing or firing, simply select this add-on during checkout or pay for it in the studio. ($30 for two small / medium pieces, anything extra is $10 per piece) Please keep in mind that our house-white glaze will be used for all finished pieces, and you'll have the joy of collecting your glazed creation approximately 2-3 weeks later. If you're unable to pick it up in person please discuss with our studio team for shipping arrangements.

If you left your items to dry or be fired in our studio, You'll get an EMAIL when they're ready for pickup. Please be sure to label your pieces and show us a pic to make it an easy collection for everyone. If you're taking your creation home, let it air dry for 4 weeks for best results. Shipping? Yes! Just $15 if you live in NSW and $18 for the rest of Australia. Please contact the team to arrange if you'd like us to post your pieces to you when they're ready.

We promise you'll leave with your hands covered in clay, so there's no need to bring your own clay. Just bring your wonderful self and get ready to get your hands dirty!

*Mezze board orders must be placed 48hrs prior to the class start time.
*Any dietary requirements (Gluten Free, Celiac etc) must be emailed 48hrs prior to the class start time. Fees may apply if notified after.
*Work may crack or even explode during kiln firing; we do not offer refunds for such instances. If your piece is mistakenly picked up by someone else, we regret we cannot offer refunds. Ensure your name is clearly marked on your work.

All clay and tools and equipment provided. (we use mid fire clay and paint and finish with a sealant, air dried clay is softer on the environment, dry time is 4 weeks at home)

Otherwise, you can leave it with us to clean, glaze and we fire two times. A Bisque and Glaze fire. $30 for two small pieces. $40 for 1 large piece.

We will contact you via sms to collect your masterpiece when ready. Bring yourselves and wear some old clothes and enclosed shoes that you don't mind getting clay on them.
