Do you love the layered, expressive world of collage? If so, you’re going to be absolutely hooked on this tactile way of building prints from texture and tone!
Collagraphs are a wonderful way to explore printmaking, texture, tone, colour, and collage all at once in this one-day workshop with artist Rachael Lee.
Whether you’re a complete beginner to printmaking or looking to refine your technique, your tutor, Rachael Lee, is here to guide you with warmth and expert tips she’s gathered over years of artistic practice.
In this class, we’ll craft three small collagraph plates—each exploring unique lines, textures, and tones—before bringing them together into stunning, multi-layered artworks.
What you’ll discover and create:
  • Mastering Tone & Texture: Learn how to build compelling imagery by incorporating texture and tone in meaningful, creative ways.
  • The Art of Inking: Explore vibrant colour combinations and professional inking techniques.
  • Press Skills: Get comfortable preparing papers and pulling your own prints on the etching press.
  • Creative Play: Experiment with dynamic techniques like "wet-on-wet" printing, ghost prints, and bleed prints.
By the end of the day, you’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of what makes a successful collagraph, your very own set of custom plates, and a series of beautiful prints to share with family and friends. Plus, you’ll leave with all the confidence and skills you need to keep exploring your printmaking journey at home!
And if you're completely new to collagraphs, you might like to join Rachael’s Collagraph Essentials class on Saturday, 5 September 2026, where you'll focus on your plate-making skills.

Art from the Urban Wilderness at Hive Studios - Hive Studios, Unit 13/10 Depot Street, Banyo QLD

The studio is located in a commercial complex on the corner of Earnshaw Road and Depot Street, near the old Golden Circle Cannery. As you enter the complex, look for the number #13 and the Art from the Urban Wilderness signs. There are 3 onsite car parks. During the week, we recommend you park on the road and walk up the driveway. If you have lots of gear you can drop it off and then park. If you need to park close to the door for accessibility reasons, let us know prior so we can reserve a park for you. On weekends or after hours, you can park within the complex in a marked car parking bay (not in front of roller doors), as its very quiet then.

Rachael Lee

Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting. By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.
