Drypoint Print Making Workshop

Create a small series of beautiful prints using this easy non-toxic etching technique!

4.5 hours

Class size 1 to 8 (public classes), 5 to 10

$185 - $195 (Earlybird price of $185 applies if you book into a public session 30+ days ahead, otherwise $195 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $185/guest for 2+ guests. $100 per class surcharge applies for private classes) (Afterpay available)

Explore the simple medium of drypoint intaglio printmaking, where lines are scratched into a plastic plate to create an image for printing.
You’ll create a small edition of prints from your own drawing, copyright-free internet image, or photograph.
Can't draw? No worries! The drypoint plates are transparent so you can just trace your image onto your plate.
You'll learn:
  • The fundamentals of intaglio printmaking including inking and wiping plates
  • How to enhance your print using chine colle (collage of rice paper whilst printing) and hand-colouring with watercolours
No chemicals are used in this process - we use Akua Intaglio inks which are soy-based and water wash-up. We’ll be printing onto artist-quality printmaking papers.
By the end of the class, you would have learnt some new skills, as well as take home your collection of unique prints!
Cancellation Policy: Life happens, we get it! You can cancel or reschedule your workshop booking anytime up to 7 days before the class. Unfortunately, if you cancel within 7 days and we're unable to fill your spot, we won’t be able to offer a refund or credit. You’re welcome to pass your ticket on to someone else - just send us a message with their name and contact details so we can update the booking. Thanks so much for your understanding and support.

  • 5/5 from Renee Brigg, attended Feb 2025: This was a fantastic, friendly, and welcoming intro to print making. I had a lovely time, Sandra was a great teacher, very patient and encouraging. Great venue as well, would recommend to everyone to try it out.
  • 5/5 from Trisha Wilson, attended Feb 2025: Fantastic day learning a (new to me) printmaking technique and thrilled to have some prints to take home. Sandra is a great teacher. Patient, knowledgeable and very generous with materials, tips and advice in a well equipped and welcoming studio space. Thank you.
  • 5/5 from Sally Randle, attended Feb 2025: Absolutely Brilliant Class. Sandra is a wonderfully generous teacher, who shares her knowledge and skills with all of her students. The whole day was engaging and interesting. If you are looking for an escape from the everyday and need somewhere to let you artistic side flow then Hive Studios is the place to go.
  • 5/5 from Kerri Wright, attended Nov 2024: Thank you Sandra, I thoroughly enjoyed your class. It was great fun and learnt so much, can’t recommend more highly to anyone wanting to dabble in printmaking.
  • 5/5 from Alex Louisa, attended Nov 2024: I had been wanting to learn the Drypoint process for such a long time, so I was very much looking forward to this workshop, and Sandra did not disappoint! The beautifully organised studio had a relaxed atmosphere, and Sandra shared her knowledge in a clear and concise way. We were treated to an up close look at her previous Drypoint work, showing a clever mix of techniques, and she guided us through every step of the process. I never felt rushed - especially as someone who loves to spend time delving into tiny details - and everyone was able to work at their own pace. I really loved how each new print we made built on what we'd learned from our previous print. I was so inspired by the possibilities that I didn't want to leave! I'm looking forward to joining some of Sandra's other classes in future, and I always love coming to this beautiful space. Highly, highly recommend!

Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting. By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.
