Encaustic Painting Workshop

Paint with molten wax and take home your ready to hang masterpiece!

5 hours Class size 2 to 3

label $190 (or 4 payments of $47.50 Afterpay)

Looking for unique things to do in Gellibrand or want to take your painting skills to the next level? Learn how to paint with encaustic wax and create a stunning artwork!

Encaustic painting is a historical technique, where the wax is heated up and painted with. Encaustic paint is a combination of beeswax, pigment and a small amount of hardener (either dammar resin or carnauba wax).

Your friendly teacher will help you work with the wax and the best tips on embedding images or small objects on the surface.

The wax paint is solid at room temperature so you will melt it before it can be applied. Once it cools and hardens, and a heat tool is used to ensure that each layer is fused to the last, this makes it a very tactile working experience.

This class will cover:

  • Introduction to the tools, resources and history of encaustic wax
  • Working in a safe environment (heat, ventilation)
  • Preparing your panel for painting (work on MDF and birch ply panels)
  • Layering and fusing the wax
  • Mark making, creating texture and embedding images
  • Embedding small objects in wax
  • Using stencils
  • Finishing your panel ready for hanging
  • Caring for encaustic paintings

Depending on your goals and vision, your teacher will assist in technical aspects of the process, including colour theory and paint mixing, and work with you on image and composition. If you just want to experiment, you are welcome to!

Encaustic is wax so it hardens at room temperature. This means your work will be ready to travel when you are. No wet paint messes!

The fun of encaustic is that you can get marvellous special effects just by melting the colourful wax paint. It can be as simple or as detailed as you choose.

At the end of the class, you can take home your encaustic painting to hang proudly on the wall!

DEB GARTLAND AAPS is a self-taught traditional and contemporary fine art photographer, who goes around with a head full of high falutin’ ideas!

Deb‘s artistic journey started early in life with a passion for writing that continues to this day – however her main love in this area has been honed to children‘s writing and haiku.

A few years ago Deb attended an Encaustic workshop and has never looked back. While the absolute love of photography and the creation of illustrative composite images is still there (and still practiced), she has truly found her medium. Deb regularly submits works (photographic, (photo) encaustic and mixed media) to local exhibitions and has had quite some success with these in terms of acceptances and sales. She collaborates often with other artists in different disciplines, runs photography and (photo) encaustic workshops and is currently Secretary of Creative Otways Inc. – a Not for Profit organisation designed to assist artists and groups (as an auspice) to obtain funding and support.

The beginning of 2019 saw Deb set up her Encaustic workshop in the Gallery, where she works and often collaborates with other artists, where she has the space to leave works in-situ, to quickly print off additional images as and when required and the freedom to do what she loves – create works that are left-of-field, confront viewers and challenge traditional boundaries.
