Looking to overcome your fear of drawing? Do you like to draw but want to loosen up your line work? Join this nature drawing class today!
In this 2.5 hour workshop, you will create exciting visual imagery using a variety of drawing and sketching techniques using ink, mark making, watercolour and expressive line work.
You'll spend a relaxing couple of hours drawing objects from our studio's extensive Natural History collection, where we have a huge variety of seed pods, leaves, sea shells, pinned insects, banksia cones and more.
Your tutor Sandra will guide you through a series of drawing exercises designed to disrupt traditional approaches and empower you to think differently about drawing.
During the session, you will:
  • Learn to draw without relying on pencils and erasers
  • Try using sticks, feathers, and other non-traditional tools
  • Move towards subjective responses not realistic representations
  • Engage in expressive mark making and playfulness that will bring out your personality in your art
By the end of the class, you will take home your collection of experimental sketches to continue playing at home!
This workshop will take place in our upstairs workshop space, which is accessible via a staircase with a landing. If you have any accessibility concerns, please message us, and we’ll arrange to use the downstairs space instead.

  • 5/5 from Judy Jones, attended Jun 2026: Thanks Sandra for such an enjoyable class. As a beginner I didn't feel intimidated and loved seeing the outcomes from using different media. I felt comfortable to ask for suggestions and loved the way this helped me to go a step further. Your range of natural objects provided great beginnings in exploring shape and texture. I will be back!
  • 5/5 from Kirsty Crowley, attended Jun 2026: Sandra was a wonderful teacher. She guided us through a series of exercises that helped lead us to a place of confidence to experiment with the range of materials at our disposal. I left the class feeling like I could try this at home. It was thoroughly enjoyable!
  • 5/5 from Carol Bacon, attended Jun 2026: ‘Expressive Nature Drawing’ was a fun class of drawing with sticks and ink, splashes of watercolour and pen. Great for those who feel intimidated by drawing but want to have a go. Sandra Pearce was patient and enthusiastic with her praise. Her demonstrations were clear and easy to follow. Having everything provided was a bonus. I highly recommend this no pressure class.
  • 5/5 from Cassy Baker, attended Jun 2026: Sandra was great in encouraging me with the art I was doing and learning to relax
  • 5/5 from Petra Lahmann, attended Jun 2025: Catching up with some drawing techniques in Sandra's class. Very inspirational class. Re-learnt some previous techniques and enjoyed how to deal with serendipity. Sandra is a very talented and patient teacher. Venue and material as usual - excellent! Another great nature drawing experience. PS: I forgot my "leaf" page (first exercise), if possible keep this for me. No name on it, sorry. Petra
  • 5/5 from Amanda Robey, attended Jun 2025: A fantastic morning learning expressive drawing techniques in a relaxed organised and very encouraging way. Sandra is a great teacher with so many excellent ideas on how to approach drawing confidently using a variety of different techniques and skills. Her class is informative and each technique is modelled clearly by her example and this can also be seen on a wider screen so there is no excuse for not being able to see or hear the demonstration. If you are looking for a way to begin drawing or if you have skills and need to widen your techniques this is a fantastic place to develop and improve your knowledge and drawing abilities.
  • 5/5 from Judi Neumann, attended Apr 2025: Loved doing the expressive nature drawing class. While I can’t draw to save myself, under Sandra’s watchful guidance, I learned just to let go and follow the shape of nature’s object in front of me. Using watercolour’s and ink, brought the little drawings to life. Sandra’s work is really special and her teaching through humour and encouragement plants that belief that you can do it. Demonstrating the methods in front of us (this can be viewed on the big screen) really helps me to see how to achieve an outcome. The studio is airy with plenty of light and is a really lovely area to work in. I really recommend this class.
  • 5/5 from Kim Jorgensen, attended Apr 2025: Had a wonderful few hours with Sandra taking us through exercises to help us let go and be creative. So easy to understand and all materials supplied. Came home with some not so bad creations. Will be going back again for more classes when I have some spare time.
  • 5/5 from Sandra Bulger, attended Apr 2025: I had such a lovely time within the friendly and relaxed setting ogf the Hive. We started out by loosening up our mark making with some quick and freeing stetches using inks, watercolours, pencil and pens. These really helped us notice and become familiar with our chosen nature item. I found the whole afternoon absorbing, creative and fun. It was such a pleasure to be guided gently by Sandra who encouraged the creation on non-perfect impressions of my lovely banksia seed pod. The afternoon was like a gift to self, highly recommended for everyone.
  • 5/5 from Milana Stevens, attended Jan 2025: My daughter, Milana, was absolutely blown away by that class. The art teacher, Sandra, was so encouraging and supportive. She helped her learn new techniques and completed several sketches for her drawing portfolio. I highly recommend that class for anyone who enjoys art.
  • 5/5 from Janine Hew, attended Dec 2024: I loved Sandra’s class this morning.. easy going relaxed atmosphere with lots of practical tips for loosening up my sketching. An abundance of little drawing exercises with her amazing supply of seed pod subjects. Lots to take away to practice at home and in the field. Thanks a million
  • 5/5 from Petra Lahmann, attended Dec 2024: I enjoyed this workshop very much and learnt quite a bit in short time. I wish we had more time to practice a bit longer on each step. 3 hrs may be better than just 2 hrs. Many thanks to Sandra.
  • 5/5 from Margot Ricardo, attended Dec 2024: Sandra was an excellent teacher. I'm no artist, but felt more capable than I've ever felt before. The whole process was well prepared, well provisioned and well done.
  • 5/5 from Ngaire Macleod, attended Dec 2024: I thoroughly enjoyed this class. I’m not confident with drawing and I found the exercises interesting and fun. Sandra was extremely well organised and her presentation with visual projection was professional and added clarity to her instructions. The course was well paced and I now am keen to get out into Nature and practise what I learned.
  • 5/5 from Cindy Neville-Norman, attended Dec 2024: Sandra is a wonderful teacher, she just got us to relax and enjoy ourselves.
