Green Wood Spoon Carving Course

Warning: spoon carving is addictive, you might just get hooked!

2 x 6 hours

Class size 1 to 4 (public classes), 1 to 6
  $340 (Afterpay available)

This comprehensive, two-day private one-on-one or group class. Is designed to allow you to become intimately familiar with a broad range of techniques and traditional hand tools through the exploration of green wood spoon carving.
In the process, laying the foundations to yet unimagined creative possibilities. Whether you're a complete beginner with no prior experience or a more seasoned woodworker seeking to expand your capacity, with the support and guidance of our experienced instructors, you will find fresh challenges that elevate your skills.
Starting with a piece of sustainably sourced green wood branch, you will utilise a froe and maul to split the branch into a working billet, which then can be hewn and sculpted with a carving axe in conjunction with a carving stump. What sets this workshop apart is that you get to use drawknives and spokeshaves in conjunction with shavehorses and spoon mules to assist with the sculpting of the spoon. Thereby providing you with a safer and less intimidating carving experience than simply utilising an axe upon a stump.
Lastly, you will turn to using a hook knife and sloyd for whittling adding your own unique visual and textual refinements to your finished object. Throughout the workshop, you'll also gain insights into tree botany, timber selection, tool sharpening, and food-safe finishes. The class provides a supportive environment where you can challenge yourself creatively while feeling connected to nature and forming new friendships.
Upon completion, you will have at least one handcrafted spoon, spatula, or ladle, made entirely by you, that is sure to delight and impress friends and family. This is more than just a class; it's an opportunity to reconnect to nature as you make new friends and experience the joy of creating something uniquely yours.
The one-on-one classes are run from my workshop in Traralgon, Gippsland, Victoria. For large groups public venues can be arranged.
If you have any questions or would like to reserve your spot, feel free to contact us. We can't wait to see you for an unforgettable creative experience!
