FAQ

Is taxidermy ethical?
Specimens for these workshops are sourced through reptile shops and killed humanely. These specimens are ideal for education purposes with the hopes that hobbyists will source already deceased specimens for conservation, education or pet memorabilia. Whenever I practice taxidermy specimens are sourced completely ethically (they are pets or wildlife that have died by other causes).
Why learn over the weekend instead of one day?
This allows for questions, one on one assistance and enhances learning when a workshop is under 3hours long. Anymore and sessions can be overwhelming. From my experience, the process is much more enjoyable and less rushed when there is a break between skinning and mounting.
Why aren't there many photos of a preserved rat?
This is the first time running this course publicly which means your rat could be the first to be showcased in the gallery!

Why learn taxidermy?
There are many reasons to learn this artform. Purposes include for artistic display, education, conservation, pet memorabilia or even to become a professional taxidermist. Ethical taxidermy is a very niche and great skill to have for those passionate about wildlife education and conservation. The majority of specimens I have preserved were for environmental education centres who use the display to teach members of the community about our native wildlife including their unique anatomy and what we can do to best protect them. There is a shortage of taxidermists in Australia and it is a profession where an academic credential is not required to preserve any animal that can be kept domestically (see your State for their regulations).
How did you learn taxidermy?
I learnt how to preserve wildlife from my mother who volunteered for Sydney Wildlife when I was 15 years old. She received her training from a highly skilled taxidermist who worked for the Australian Museum. Traditional taxidermy is very easy to learn hands on and requires patiencein learning specific skills, a meticulous hand and good eye for detail.
