Love and Luminaries: Pottery Class

A calming pottery class celebrating love, light and handmade clay

1.5 hours

Class size 1 to 8 (public classes), 6 to 10
$85 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

In this calming pottery class, your teacher, Melissa, will guide you through creating a handmade clay luminary and a matching tray. The luminary will be approximately 10 cm tall and around 8 cm wide, designed to gently hold a candlelight. We will use natural flora to texture the tray, which can be used underneath the luminary or as a separate trinket dish.
This class is an invitation to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasure of working with clay. Everyone is welcome to share in the love of pottery during this relaxed and inclusive creative experience.
Using beginner-friendly hand-building techniques, Melissa will demonstrate each step and provide guidance throughout, giving you space to personalise your pieces with thoughtful details. All pieces will be glazed white and kiln-fired after class and will be ready for collection in approximately 5 weeks.
What you’ll make:
  • 1 handmade clay luminary
  • 1 clay tray (use with the luminary or as a trinket dish)
This is a hands-on pottery workshop. As the venue is closed during our workshop, refreshments are not included. You’re welcome to bring your own, or pre-book packages with the venue.

I’m Melissa, a potter and English teacher based in Brighton on the northern bayside of Brisbane. I've been more seriously doing pottery for about six years after taking a class in wheel throwing. Working with clay is addictive, good for personal well-being, and achievable — and that’s why I keep coming back to it.
I now work from my home studio, where I enjoy both hand-building and wheel throwing objects that I mostly gift to family and friends. I'm a member of my local community studio, which allows me to learn from other potters. I now fire at home with my own kiln and mix many of my own glazes.
Alongside making, I've taught high school English and Arts for about ten years. My workshops are calm, encouraging, and thoughtfully structured — and I cater mostly for beginners.
I'm fairly confident that after a class or two, you may catch the very contagious pottery bug, and I hope you do.
