Make a Buddha Bowl Class

Create a large Buddha bowl with dark matter clay in Tamborine Mountain!

1.5 hours Location Tamborine Mountain Class size 1 to 6 guests   $145 - $149 ($149 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $145/guest for 2+ guests) (Afterpay available)

Now you're probably wondering, what is a Buddha bowl? As the story goes, the Buddha woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl in exchange for his wise wisdom, advice and mind. At the end of his walks, he would eat whatever he had been given.
You might also find most Buddha bowls are being brought out to your tables in cafes and restaurants. It is typically a fine line between a Buddha bowl and a large walled plate. So if this is your type of ceramic vessel you want to forge with your hands, then come and join us in this wheel throwing class to create your very own Buddha bowl.
To make this class even more exciting, the clay body of choice is a special clay from Keane Ceramics that looks like chocolate when thrown and when fired to completion appears jet black with a popping white speckle. This clay body is called dark matter and is a sturdy, strong and durable clay body. This class is suitable for a beginner or intermediate due to the grog content.
Throw your hands and mind into the world of wheel throwing and discover the basic mechanics of throwing clay on the wheel with our Buddha bowl class. While learning the fundamental techniques to create a large, wide functional bowl, you will also walk away with a large insight into how to create other vessels and in turn help you continue your wheel throwing adventures.
Once your pieces are complete, they will be dried and undergo their first fire. From here, you will be welcomed back to choose a time that suits you to glaze your bowl. Choose from our extensive range of Coyote glazes and Mayco range. Our glazes are food-safe and dishwasher safe.
Whether you're looking for a creative outlet, a new hobby or a way to express yourself, this workshop is the perfect opportunity to learn, enjoy and explore the art of pottery.

Being a small class was a huge bonus giving Dyllan plenty of time to help everyone and explain things properly (and rescue us when things didn’t quite go to plan ). I’d definitely recommend this class to anyone wanting to try pottery Dyllan made the whole experience so enjoyable, and I’d 100% do it again!

I bought this as a gift for my wife, we were complete novices but that wasn’t an issue. It was a great experience and would recommend this to anyone to give a whirl and spin the wheel. Thank you Dylan.
  • 5/5 from Janet Taylor, attended Nov 2025: What a terrific time.. Dyllan was fantastic and patient and I am so happy with my two items (thanks to Dyllan resurrecting my errors). I made two Buddha bowls and want to book more classes. Can’t wait to pick them up. Highly recommend Dyllan’s classes. Thank you again.

  • 5/5 from Roy Sargent, attended Feb 2025: Dyllan was (as usual) fantastic, taking the class step by step through the process. He ensured each person was able to progress with viable pottery, so that by the end of the class, everyone had a stunning piece. He is a great caoh and very knowledgable about pottery. The studio is well set up, and in a stunning location. I thoroughly enjoy his classes.
  • 5/5 from Julie Iscaro, attended Jan 2025: I brought my mum and 9 yr old to the Buddha bowl class today and we had the best experience. Dylan was patient and clear and super helpful. Very hands on learning at a really good pace. Not too fast or slow, with lots of help and direction as we went through each step. We all left with big smiles and feeling really peaceful too. Cant wait to come back in and glaze our creations. Will definitely be back for another class too!
