Make a Chattered Ramen Bowl and Dish Class

If you love ramen and admire the incredible pots that accompany most ramen dishes, then look no further! In this hour and a half class, you will create your very own chattered ramen bowl and dish. These two vessels will be wheel-thrown by yourself with the attention and patience of one of our in-house potters and teachers.

Discover the basics of throwing clay on the wheel while learning the fundamental techniques to create bowls, more specifically ramen bowls/dishes. One thing that separates this class from our others is the choice of clay we have prepared for this class.

Each student will be using black clay. This clay is not only an incredibly smooth clay to use but looks amazing with Shino glazes. You will also get to experience tricks and tips for creating texture such as chattering (using trimming tools), which allows the glaze to interact with the textured surface and is common in a lot of Japanese pottery.

The vessels created will then be glazed by you on your own day of choosing within 3-4 weeks after your first class. We offer a large range of imported glazes for you to select from. With this class, we highly recommend our Shino range of glazes.

What is a Shino glaze?

• Shino glazes are very playful among pottery that has been chattered or contains texture.
• Shino glazes can range in colour from milky white to orange, sometimes with charcoal grey spotting, known as "carbon trap, " which is the trapping of carbon in the glaze during the firing process.
