Description
Looking for the perfect creative outdoor excursion for your private group or homeschool co-op?
Join us for a magical, full-day creative journey in the stunning natural setting of Lake Baroon (Maleny). In this immersive, all-weather workshop, children will connect with nature while exploring multiple unique craft techniques to build their very own hanging bird mobile.
This unique experience is divided into two engaging creative sessions, with plenty of time in between to enjoy a picnic, play, and explore the beautiful lakeside park.
What We Will Do:
Part 1: Bird Sculpting & Paper Rice (10:00AM – 11:30AM)
The day begins with hands-on sculpting. Our young artists will learn how to mould and shape sweet little birds using lightweight, tactile Paper Clay. Once sculpted, they will apply intricate, beautiful details using rice paper techniques.
11:30AM to 1:00PM: Lunch Break & Free Time to enjoy Lake Baroon
Part 2: Painting & Introduction to Weaving (1:00PM – 2:30PM)
In the afternoon, we gather back to bring our creations to life with vibrant paints. Children will then be introduced to basic weaving techniques, learning how to assemble their clay pieces, beads, and twine into a beautiful, balanced hanging mobile to take home.
Rain or Shine (All-Weather)
Nature is our studio! This workshop is designed to be held outdoors at Lake Baroon to fully inspire the children. However, we have excellent sheltered options nearby, ensuring the creative fun goes on in all weather conditions.
Skills your group will learn:
3D Clay Sculpting & Form Development: Children will learn how to manipulate lightweight paper clay, mastering hand-eye coordination to transform a simple block of clay into a balanced, three-dimensional bird shape.
Precision Decoupage & Surface Design: They will discover the delicate art of working with rice paper, learning how to apply it smoothly onto curved clay surfaces to create intricate patterns and textures.
Introduction to Fibre Arts & Weaving: Young artists will learn the fundamentals of weaving and knotting, understanding tension and structure as they build the framework to suspend their mobile.
Artistic Problem-Solving & Balance: Assembling a hanging mobile teaches basic principles of physics, weight distribution, and balance, encouraging kids to experiment and adjust their pieces so they hang perfectly.
Fine Motor Skills & Sensory Exploration: The entire process—from kneading clay to threading fine beads and weaving twine—is a fantastic workout for fine motor development and tactile learning.
What to Bring:
  • A picnic lunch, snacks, and water for the break.
  • Clothing that can get a little messy (creative work is messy work!).
  • Hats and sunscreen.
  • A handy tip for the trip home: Please bring a small cardboard box or container for each child, just in case their beautiful clay creations aren't 100% dry by the end of the day!
Parental Supervision
To ensure every young artist gets the support they need, children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult to help them with the sculpting and weaving activities.
What you'll get
Each child will take home their own unique, nature-inspired hanging bird mobile, ready to display.
Premium crafting materials: Full access to high-quality paper clay, beautiful rice paper, paints, twine, beads, and weaving tools.

Bio
Professional Ceramicist & Instructor (10 Years Experience)
Based in the heart of Maleny, I am a professional ceramicist with over a decade of experience dedicated to the craft of intentional, slow-made art. My practice is rooted in the belief that pottery is a natural dialogue between the hands and the clay—a grounding way to reconnect with your creativity.
In my studio, I specialize in the art of hand-building and pinching, as well as my signature "drawing with clay" technique using liquid porcelain. I believe that even a beginner’s first piece should be a piece you are truly proud of.
My workshops are designed to be calm, welcoming spaces where we focus on quality and gentle learning, rather than perfection.
My mission is to offer more than just a class; I provide a space to slow down and create. Whether you are learning to shape your first succulent pot or exploring the depth of organic textures, my workshops are designed to help you leave with a piece that reflects both your own expression and a solid foundation of skills.
Join me in my Maleny studio for a peaceful, hands-on experience that connects you to the timeless tradition of working with clay.
