Establish a horizon line

Establish a Horizon Line

Choose whether you want your horizon in the middle of the page or higher or lower. Usually having it off centre allows for more visual interest.


Begin with yellow

Begin with Yellow

To create an intensity of the sunset, work with yellow, layering up shading with firmer pressure at the horizon line, moving up into the sky.


Introduce red

Introduce Red

Gently incorporate red over a portion of the yellow further away from the horizon line.


Add blue

Add Blue

Start introducing blue from the top of the page moving down to the horizon line carefully blending into the red to form purple.


Create a reflection

Create a Reflection

Now use the yellow in various shades by firmly and lightly shading the suns reflection on the water.


Draw the ocean

Draw the Ocean

Using the blue firmer at the horizon line moving down and lightly across into the sun’s reflection.


Form depth in the ocean

Form Depth in the Ocean

To create depth and visual interest use the red gently over the blue to create purple and blue over the yellow to create green.


Blending

Blending

Final blending allows you to create further depth in parts of the drawing. Final touches to your finished ocean drawing.


This drawing workshop focuses on primary colours and blending to help you create a beautiful sunset artwork. You'll learn drawing and art techniques to help you with your illustration, so you can finish with something you can be proud of.
Even if you've never tried drawing before, this is a beginner-friendly class designed to be engaging and supportive. This is a hands-on class with guidance, where you'll have the chance to practice different shading and colouring techniques using red, blue and yellow pencils.
