6.5 hours Class size 1 to 2 guests       $220

Get creative at Kaya Jewers' hands-on linocut day class in Melbourne and make unique prints and designs from scratch!
In this intensive class, you will learn how to carve lino and print a multi-block edition using a key block. You'll learn to carve the key block first, which is a detailed outline block. Once you have your key block you will print it out and start planning your colours. This technique is used in traditional Japanese woodblock print, mokuhanga. We will be carving 3 blocks of A5 size..one outline block and 2 colours. The class is 6 hours with a 30 minute break for lunch.
In the class, your teacher will talk you through some different ways to print at home.
This is a very personalised class with only 2 participants per session.
During the class, we will cover:
  • Drawing designs (make sure to come to class with some ideas)
  • Carving your key plate with your own design
  • Planing and carving your coloured blocks
  • Printing your designs
If you're looking for unique things to do in Melbourne, why not try out this fun linocutting class and turn your design into real-life artwork in just a few simple steps!

  • 5/5 from Cherie Kewley, attended Oct 2026: My daughter and I loved this class. Having only 2 people in each class made it more personal, great for a mother daughter experience. We have lovely prints and Kaya was fantastic.
  • 5/5 from Inez Bardell, attended Sep 2024: Jays is great and the workshop is fun. She managed so well especially when I became sick later in the afternoon now
  • 5/5 from Kelly Ingram, attended Apr 2024: Kaya was friendly and shared her knowledge of this technique well. The workshop ran smoothly, and was lovely to have just one other person in the class with me. It was a lovely, relaxing way to spend a Sunday and I love the prints I ended up with.
  • 5/5 from Kordula Dunscombe, attended Apr 2024: I was looking for a class to refresh, and build on, my very rusty lino-printing knowledge and Kaya's class was perfect for me. There was plenty of time to work on my project and Kaya is very knowledgeable and helpful, as well as being relaxed and patient. Her studio is a lovely space, with everything we needed provided. I learnt a lot about the various tools, types of lino, how to carve it, how to think my way through the complexities of a 3 plate (4 colour counting white) print, how to mix the inks, how to use the press, etc. With the benefit of hindsight, I should done as Kaya recommended in the course info and come along with a design rather than trying to wing it on the day. But it was the most relaxing and enjoyable day I've had in a long time and definitely worth every cent!
  • 5/5 from Sam Spiers, attended Mar 2024: This was a fantastic class, all materials were provided and the teacher, Kaya, brought a lot of experience to provide thoughtful advice, help and guidance, and wasn't afraid to experiment. A really enjoyable day, I learnt a lot about multi-plate printing and different colour techniques and I was very happy with the final print. Thanks Kaya!

I am a printmaker based in Melbournes East. I've been passionate about printmaking since I first studied it in 2002. My studio, Hazy Bubble Studio, is located in Kew East.
I've produced prints in just about every form of printmaking from lithography to aquatint, to monoprint, and all things in between.
I currently have a small press and my studio is spacious enough to host small, focused groups.
