So what the heck is Alternative Acrylics, you ask? It’s a serious painting technique from a seriously talented artist… with not-so-serious energy.
Forget fruit bowls and perfectly polite landscapes! This workshop is about getting messy, moving fast, and learning how to paint like you mean it. Sydney artist Stephen Evans has spent over 30 years mastering colour, light, and drama across film sets, theatre backdrops, fine art, and murals. For the last two decades, he’s run his own Bondi studio and gallery, creating large-scale works that capture light, movement, and emotion; often using his secret weapon: finger painting.
That’s right – brushes are optional. In this session, Stephen will show you how to ditch perfectionism, loosen up, and paint a dramatic sunset cloudscape using his expressive, hands-on technique. You’ll learn how to build light and depth, blend acrylics like a pro, and create atmosphere with bold, intuitive mark-making.
This workshop is perfect for beginners and experienced painters alike, especially anyone who wants to break out of the “paint-by-numbers” mindset and rediscover the fun in painting.
Come ready to get your hands (literally) into the work, push some paint around, and see what happens when technique meets play.

My name is Stephen Evans, I am a full-time working artist with 30 years of experience working as a scenic artist in film and theatre, Fine art and mural work. For the last 20 years, I have run a studio/gallery in Bondi beach showcasing my work and producing artworks.
I have also run workshops in studios, galleries and schools. One of my painting methods, “Finger painting” is used to create fast, dramatic, scenic paintings and I would love to share this technique with people in this workshop.

We’ve teamed up with Australia’s brightest creative minds to share their knowledge and help teach you a new skill. From 3D printing and stencil art through to music and gardening – life skills and personal development through to cooking doughnuts and mushroom foraging, we offer a broad range of fun and creative short courses to suit our time poor lives. We will inspire you to pick up that pen, paintbrush, hammer or sewing machine and flick the switch that will kickstart a whole new way of life.Community values lie at the heart of our project. We collaborate with local artists and industry experts to teach classes and utilise local suppliers for any materials needed. We also provide a creative environment for emerging artists to produce and sell work, and meet like minded individuals. Work-Shop will be a space for everyone, with a rotating schedule of art shows, information nights on local issues and a whole range of events and community initiatives.
