Create a beautiful mosaic bird inspired by Marc Chagall in a relaxed full-day workshop, complete with Devonshire tea, scones, jam, and cream.
Sunday, 8 November | 10.00am–4.00pm
Spend a joyful day immersed in colour, creativity, and the tactile art of mosaic making at Melbourne Studio of Art.
In this hands-on workshop, multidisciplinary artist and modern artisan Kirsten Asche-Woodger will guide you through creating your own colourful Chagall-inspired mosaic bird, using a beautiful selection of glass, tiles, beads, and fine china.
Designed for both complete beginners and those with some mosaic experience, this is a chance to slow down, experiment with colour and texture, learn practical mosaic techniques, and enjoy the deeply satisfying process of making something beautiful by hand.
What you'll do:
We’ll begin by looking at the fascinating history of mosaic and the work of Marc Chagall, taking inspiration from his expressive colour, playful forms, and fantastical imagery.
Kirsten will then guide you step-by-step through the mosaic-making process. You'll learn how to:
  • Develop your design using a bird template.
  • Select and combine colours, textures, and materials.
  • Safely use mosaic cutters to create different shapes.
  • Arrange glass, tiles, beads, and fine china.
  • Consider composition, pattern, and balance.
  • Lay out and glue your mosaic pieces.
  • Prepare your finished work for grouting.
  • Understand the final grouting process through a demonstration.
Throughout the day, Kirsten will provide individual guidance and creative suggestions, allowing you to develop a piece that is distinctly your own.
Your mosaic will be ready to take home at the end of the workshop, together with grout and instructions for completing the final stage once your artwork has dried.
And because creativity is even better with something delicious, we'll take time during the day to enjoy a Devonshire tea with scones, jam, and cream.
Meet your teacher:
Kirsten Asche-Woodger is a multidisciplinary artist and modern artisan with more than 15 years of teaching experience and a particular passion for mosaic, painting, textiles, and wearable art.
Her mosaic work combines beads, glass tiles, and fine china to create richly textured pieces filled with light and colour. Inspired by artists including Marc Chagall, Antoni Gaudí, and Georgia O'Keeffe, Kirsten has a wonderful ability to make the intricate process of mosaic making feel simple, accessible, and enjoyable.
Her workshops are warm, encouraging, and hands-on, with plenty of individual attention and room for creative exploration.
No previous mosaic experience is required.
Come on your own or bring a friend and spend a wonderfully creative Sunday making, learning, and enjoying the company of fellow art lovers.
You'll leave with new mosaic skills, your own unique Chagall-inspired artwork, and, we hope, the desire to keep creating.
