Mosaic Art Professional Development for Visual Arts Educators
Like Minds Studio invites Visual Arts educators to take part in a thoughtfully designed Professional Development workshop focused on mosaic art techniques and their practical application in school settings. This immersive 5-hour indoor/outdoor session is held at the Fairfield Community Room in Melbourne and is suitable for both primary and secondary teachers.
The workshop provides structured, hands-on learning in mosaic art processes, supporting teachers to build both technical skill and teaching confidence. Participants will explore design development, material selection, and construction techniques, with clear guidance on how these processes can be adapted for individual student projects as well as collaborative classroom and whole-school mural initiatives.
A key focus of the session is supporting teachers to successfully plan and deliver mosaic projects in real-world teaching contexts. Participants will learn how to scaffold skills across year levels, manage group workflows, and sequence lessons effectively. The workshop also addresses practical considerations such as safe tool use, risk management, classroom organisation, and selecting durable, affordable materials suitable for indoor and outdoor environments.
During the session, each participant will create an individual mosaic artwork, developing skills in cutting, shaping, adhering, and grouting tiles to achieve strong, professional results. Alongside this hands-on making, teachers will engage in guided planning for collaborative mural projects, including discussion of design approaches, timelines, material quantities, and strategies for maintaining quality and consistency across group work.
All materials are provided, including tiles and grout, and participants will receive practical advice on sourcing materials and setting up mosaic projects within typical school budgets. Teachers will leave with a completed artwork, clear planning frameworks, and a bank of ideas that can be implemented directly in the classroom.
This Professional Development opportunity is ideal for educators seeking to broaden their visual arts practice, explore mosaic as a medium for both individual and collaborative learning, and strengthen their confidence in delivering engaging, hands-on art experiences for students.
The Fairfield Community Room is wheelchair accessible, with accessible parking available via the library car park off Arthur Street and accessible bathroom facilities.

As a qualified art teacher, I love nothing more than seeing the expressions of joy, confidence and satisfaction that my students share when they have experienced a successful moment in my art classes. After completing a Bachelor in Visual Arts and complementing this with a Masters in Teaching, I have spent the last 13 years creating and making with a range of ages and abilities. From running regular art classes to full whole school art projects and professional engagement and learning days, I have turned my skills to offering public and private art workshops in key areas of craft.
