Join Luke at Into Carry in Melbourne to turn waste materials into new bags with these 3 sessions of guided bag upcycling. Into Carry’s expert bag makers will guide you through this step-by-step process to build quality bags from alternative materials. This easy-to-learn process can be repeated again and again at home on a domestic sewing machine.
Bags & Creative Outcomes:
Over the five weeks, we cover a handful of practical textile repair and customisation skills so you can fix and style existing garments. These techniques are great for repairs but also lend themselves to styling and embellishing a wide variety of waste materials.
Once we've got these techniques on the tool belt, we guide you through the sizing, utility, and order of assembly for your perfect tote bag or market bag. Following our pattern guidelines, you have full control over the specifications of the design and process, so you can learn the decisions and troubleshooting required when working with various waste materials (including, but not limited to textiles, tarps, banners, plastics). Yum.
  • Techniques to Repair & Style Materials (Reverse Appliqué, Patches & Seam Stack)
  • Customisable Straight-Edge Bag Pattern Process
  • Personalised Bag (designed and made by you!)
Learning Outcomes:
Over the three weeks you will learn:
  • How to operate, thread, and troubleshoot a domestic sewing machine
  • The process of assembly for creating a lined bag with custom straps
  • How to create your own bag from waste materials
Who It's For
This class is for beginner to intermediate sewers looking to create their own bag and/or learn more about the bag-making process. We cover the fundamentals of sewing while ensuring there's ample time for creativity and refining skills so you can make epic things from average waste.
All of our courses are designed to meet you at your current skill level. If you're new to sewing, we will guide you through fundamental processes. If you're more experienced, we can push you for a more complex design and manufacturing process.
Teaching Style
Our tailored teaching process is designed to prompt creativity and help guide you through the bag design process. From creative inception right through to finishing your last seam, we will guide you step by step through the process so you're confident to go out upcycling on your own.

Waste Materials
We have a LOT of overlooked materials here at the studio. If you have a particular material you would like to upcycle, please bring it in! We love exploring new materials. Otherwise, we have an abundance of banners, denim, sleeping bags, upholstery fabric, tarps, workwear, and other random goodies here.
By the end of the course, you can take home your new handbag or shoulder bag to wear proudly!

Note: if you would like to use soft plastic in your design, you can create your own at home with our online tutorial and bring it into class (you won't need this material until week 3). All leftover textiles and offcuts are externally recycled with UPPAREL.
