We'll begin with an introduction to the pottery wheel, clay and the basics you'll need to get started. Your tutor will demonstrate the process step by step before it's your turn to have a go.

Now it's your turn. With your own wheel for the entire workshop, you'll have plenty of time to experiment, get your hands dirty and discover the wonderfully tactile process of working with clay.

At the end of the workshop, choose your two favourite pieces to be professionally trimmed, glazed and fired by our studio team. You'll also have the opportunity to select the glaze from our beautiful selection of studio glazes.


Collect Your Finished Pieces

Around 3–4 weeks later, your finished ceramics will be ready to collect from the studio, ready to enjoy at home. We'll email you as soon as they're ready.

Step away from the everyday and spend two hands-on hours discovering the joy of wheel throwing at Sarah Schembri Ceramics in the heart of Fitzroy.
Whether you're completely new to pottery or simply want to enjoy some time being creative, this workshop is a fun and relaxed introduction to the craft. With your own pottery wheel for the entire session, you'll learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing and experience the wonderfully tactile process of transforming clay into your own unique pieces.
Our experienced tutors will guide you through each stage of the process, from centring and opening your clay to pulling, shaping and refining your pieces. There's no pressure to get it perfect. Just plenty of encouragement, personalised guidance and time to experiment and enjoy being creative.
Choose your two favourite creations at the end of the workshop, and we'll take care of the finishing touches, professionally trimming, glazing and firing them for you. Additional items can be kept at $15 (includes GST) per item, payable on the day.
Your finished ceramics will be ready to collect from the studio approximately 3–4 weeks later, giving you something special to look forward to.

Public workshops require a minimum of 6 participants to go ahead. In the unlikely event that a session doesn't reach the required numbers, we'll contact you with the option to transfer to another date or receive a refund.

Our studio is equipped with two InovaAir DV20 medical-grade air purifiers, designed for use in clinical environments to help remove airborne viral and bacterial contaminants.
What you'll get
An introduction to pottery on the wheel which includes clay, tools and glazes and 2 selected pieces to be fired for your home.
Knowledge required
Absolutely no previous pottery experience is required. Our workshops are designed for complete beginners, so all you need to bring is a little curiosity and a willingness to get your hands dirty.
What to bring
  • An apron/old shirt and towel
  • Wear clothes that can get dirty – this class is hands-on
  • Closed-toe shoes are essential while in the studio
  • We recommend keeping your nails short and tying back long hair for the most comfortable experience working with clay

Welcome to Sarah Schembri Ceramics, a warm and welcoming pottery studio in the heart of Fitzroy, Melbourne.
I discovered pottery in 2002 while working in the corporate world and quickly fell in love with the satisfaction and calm of working with clay.
Today, I’m joined by a wonderful team of experienced pottery tutors who share my passion for teaching and creating an inclusive, supportive studio community. From beginner wheel throwing and hand building to six and eight-week courses, our classes are designed for all experience levels and encourage you to slow down and enjoy the process of making something by hand.
We love bringing people together for private workshops, including corporate team-building events, birthdays, hens parties and celebrations.
Whether you’re trying pottery for the first time, developing your skills or simply looking for a fun and creative experience with friends or workmates, you’ll find expert guidance, plenty of encouragement and a relaxed atmosphere at our Fitzroy studio.
