What you'll do

If you love botanical themes and bright colours, this is the workshop for you.
Artist Jacqueline Christians has held open studios for over 10 years and runs painting workshops in fun and easy to learn steps at Up Gallery. In this 5-hour session, she takes you on a graphic journey using acrylic paint on canvas to create your own large canvas piece with a botanical pop. Artworks are based on a series she created in her studio.

First up, you will use real and pictorial references of Australian native flora like banksias, gum flowers, and pods, etc., to draw contours and silhouettes using charcoal and graphite on paper. You will then assemble a rough composition to use for your final painting.

The second part is demonstrated - 3 ways of blocking in a background on the canvas - washes and flows, hard edge colour panels, or loose blended brushwork. You choose the colours you like and then apply them to the canvas.

The third part brings the silhouette drawing onto the artwork. We will be overpainting in black the detailed drawing you created earlier. At this stage, your composition can evolve, and extra details added, and this is where your underpainting colours can really pop.

You will have fun and learn some good tips for creating large-scale works, transferring images, and being confident in acrylic painting processes. There are no mistakes, just happy accidents!

We have a large community of talented painters, potters, sculptors, jewellers and printmakers who deliver fine art based workshops for up to 8 students, just steps away to the forest and sassafras village shops. Onsite carparking and bus stop at front gate allows easy access including flat ground for disability access.
