Watercolour Leaf Painting Class for Beginners

Watercolour is the perfect medium for painting our beautiful gum leaves. There are so many colours and marks to experiment with! To begin with, we will be working on multiple small sheets of top-quality watercolour paper. We'll figure out our colours and textures first with some test swatches, then we'll practise applying our swatch techniques to some individual leaves one by one. I'll show you how to create all those wonderful varied marks you see on gum/eucalyptus leaves. We'll only use a few colours of paint to avoid overwhelm, and we'll be learning about the advantages of using granulating watercolour paint for a subject like this. Once we've practised our leaves on our smallest sheets of paper, we'll be working on a slightly larger sheet to create our "final" piece. Don't worry if you don't like the idea of drawing the leaf outlines freehand yourself - I'll show you a trick to accomplish this! I will bring a bunch of leaves with me for us to use as inspiration, but if you find any leaves yourself that you'd like to try painting, please feel free to bring them along, and I'll suggest which techniques would work best.My goal is to give you a fantastic starting point, so you feel prepared to confidently begin painting your watercolour gum leaves at home, and for you to know exactly which materials you can start with, without needing a huge budget. I will be available to answer any questions you may have during the class, and I'd love to see you there! Please note: This class is booked into the upstairs space at Hive Studios, which requires walking up two flights of stairs.
