Natural Shibori Dyeing Workshop

Create a natural dye bath and learn Shibori on the Sunshine Coast!

3.5 hours Class size 6 to 8     label $160

Join Anita Stapenell in this Shibori workshop and connect to the natural world, explore the possibilities of the natural dye bath and discover its low impact on the environment too.

In this hands-on workshop, you will be guided through the basic knowledge of the natural dye palette, and be introduced to Shibori techniques and different types of materials such as ahimsa silk, organic hemp and organic cotton.

Ahimsa silk is also known as peace silk because it is produced without harming or killing the silkworm in the process. All silk used in our workshops is ahimsa silk instead of conventional silk.

With support from the teacher, you will produce a number of experimental pieces. The workshop size is kept small and is designed for beginners. You will gain the confidence to be able to experiment at home with kitchen scraps and natural foraged items.

All materials are included in the workshop and you have a choice of different colour dye baths. Your teacher does have options for the vegan community. Please reach out as they would love to discuss options with you.

I'm Anita, owner, designer + maker of Sunshine Coast local fashion label Sunday Dreaming the Label. I graduated from Perth's South Metropolitan TAFE 2015 with an advanced diploma of applied fashion and design. Throughout my time studying, learning and being exposed to the impact fast fashion has on people and planet, it was very clear to me the path I was to take with my creative direction.

I fell in love with natural dyeing, and textile development soon became my main focus whilst studying and beyond. I was awarded the textile development award for my naturally hand-dyed graduation collection, which was a completely experimental process. I was also selected and participated in the Perth Fashion Festival Student Runway for one of my naturally hand-dyed menswear looks.

Sunday dreaming the Label came to life in 2016, with the main focus of providing high quality, low impact clothing without compromising style. Using resources provided by the earth, with the ability to return to earth is kept close to my heart, as is conscious consumerism.

Reducing toxins within the natural dye process, is a high priority. My intention is to offer a safe and healthy experimental workshop, inspiring the participants to connect to their own creative well, and feel confident to continue the discovery at home.

The guided workshop I offer, draws on knowledge from my own experimental creative journey, experience from textile development within my business and knowledge learnt from studies. My natural dye journey and experimental process has led me to embracing the neutral colour palette and reducing toxins within the natural dye process. The use of harsh mordants are replaced with naturally tannin rich matter, keeping the process safe for the participants and their health.

So together, let's connect with what is important, educate ourselves and live by example.
