Ready to loosen up your drawing practice and discover the expressive possibilities of charcoal and pastel?
Raw, earthy, and wonderfully tactile, charcoal and pastel are versatile drawing media that can create everything from delicate tonal transitions to bold, energetic marks. Their velvety surfaces and rich tonal range make them ideal for capturing atmosphere, light, and three-dimensional form.
In this hands-on workshop, you'll explore a variety of dry media: willow charcoal, compressed charcoal, coloured charcoal pencils, dry pastels, chalk, and Conté. Learn how different grades of charcoal behave and how to use them confidently to create depth, contrast, and expressive imagery.
Through a series of guided exercises, you'll investigate tonal drawing, shadows and highlights, subtractive drawing with erasers, and blending techniques using fingers, paper stumps, and cloth. You'll discover how light and shade can be used to sculpt form and bring your drawings to life.
You'll also experiment with combining dry and wet media, activating charcoal for painterly effects and exploring the exciting possibilities that emerge when drawing and painting overlap. Fixatives and finishing techniques will also be discussed.
Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike, this energetic workshop will help you develop a deeper understanding of these versatile materials while encouraging experimentation, confidence, and expressive mark-making.
