Would you love to design your own wrapping paper, textiles, or beautifully patterned artworks?
This workshop takes foam block printing to the next level by introducing the art of creating seamless repeat patterns by hand. Rather than using a single foam block, you'll design a larger printing block made up of multiple foam elements and learn how to position and align it so your design repeats seamlessly across the page.
Foam block printing offers a similar aesthetic to traditional lino printing but with a simpler, more accessible approach. Guided by experimental printmaker Rachael Lee, you'll discover how repeat pattern designers think and work, creating designs that can continue endlessly without obvious joins.
If you've enjoyed our introductory foam block printing class, this workshop will extend your skills into repeat pattern design while retaining all the fun and ease of cutting and printing foam blocks.
You'll design and cut your own foam shapes using scissors, combining geometric, abstract, or nature-inspired elements into a cohesive pattern. You'll then learn the key principles of repeat layout and registration, printing your design multiple times to build a seamless pattern across the page.
Working with quality papers, you'll create an A3 print (29.7 × 42 cm) using hand-printing techniques, rollers, and Sakura oil-based inks, with a simple non-toxic two-part clean-up process. You are welcome to bring along a blank fabric item such as a tea towel, apron, or just a piece of fabric to print onto as well (light plain colour, ideally white and close weave).
You'll gain skills in:
  • Creating a seamless repeat pattern by hand without using computer software
  • Understanding how repeat patterns are constructed and aligned
  • Designing and arranging individual elements within a unified theme
  • Balancing shape, texture, and line in your composition
  • Inking your block using a roller and quality inks
  • Positioning and registering your block for successful pattern repeats
  • Building confidence in hand-printing repeat designs
Take home your custom-made printing block to continue creating unique artworks, wrapping paper, handmade gifts, and printed textiles at home. Once you've learned the repeat pattern method, you'll be able to create your own new designs.

Rachael Lee

Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting. By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.
