Japanese Kinusaiga Fabric Art Workshop for Beginners

No sewing. No experience. Just fabric, colour, and a few gloriously creative hours!

2.5 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests

$79 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

In this relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop, immerse yourself in a Japanese kinusaiga fabric art workshop for beginners. Discover the beautiful craft of kinusaiga - a unique textile technique likened to “painting with fabric”.
Don't worry if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed at the thought of trying something new. Kinusaiga is surprisingly simple, incredibly satisfying, and you'll be expertly guided through each step.
  • Start by selecting from a stunning array of colourful fabrics, which may be the most challenging part of the entire workshop.
  • Experiment with colours, patterns, and combinations until you discover your perfect match.
  • Learn how to cut, place, and tuck your fabric into your design, witnessing how little scraps can transform into a distinct piece of artwork without a single stitch required.
Throughout the workshop, you'll dive into the basic techniques of kinusaiga, explore different colours and designs, and craft your very own unique piece to take home. No prior art or craft experience is necessary - if you can choose fabric and follow a line, you've got this covered.
You'll have everything you need provided, from prepared designs to tools and a delightful assortment of fabrics.
By the end of the workshop, you'll not only leave with your own kinusaiga artwork but also the confidence to continue experimenting with this technique at home. Not to mention, you'll have cherished some creative time, away from the everyday humdrum, just because you felt like it.
This workshop is perfect for you if:
  • You've been yearning for creative time but struggle to carve out a space for it.
  • You adore exploring new crafts and techniques.
  • Hundreds of creative ideas swirl in your mind, but beginning can be daunting.
  • You doubt your artistic abilities.
  • Overthinking creative projects or fearing mistakes hold you back.
  • You simply desire to spend a delightful few hours savouring fabric, colour, and pattern play.
Remember, you don't need to be an artist, replicate my design, or achieve perfection. All you need is curiosity - so come along and let your creativity bloom!

Messy Makes is a creative workshop space for women who want to make, play and try something new — without the pressure to be perfect.
It’s for the craft-curious, the serial hobby collectors, the 3am Pinterest scrollers, and anyone with a cupboard full of supplies they absolutely *had* to buy… but are now too nice to use.
Hi, I’m Leoné — lifelong maker, creative rabbit-hole enthusiast, collector of far too many craft supplies, and the person behind Messy Makes.
I started Messy Makes because I wanted to create the kind of creative space I’d love to go to myself: somewhere relaxed and welcoming where women can get together, learn something new, have a laugh and spend a few glorious hours simply making things.
Because somewhere between childhood and adulthood, creativity got a bit… serious.
Suddenly things had to be good. Or useful. Or beautiful. Or worthy of posting on Instagram.
So we save the good paper.
We don’t use the expensive paint.
We buy the 48-pack because obviously the 12-pack simply will not do — and then become slightly terrified of actually using any of it.
And sometimes we get so caught up worrying about whether we’ll make something good that we forget the whole reason we wanted to make something in the first place:
because making stuff is FUN.
I’m learning to let go of that too.
Messy Makes is my invitation to do it together.
Our workshops are relaxed, welcoming and beginner-friendly. You don’t need to be artistic. You don’t need to be “crafty”. And you definitely don’t need to know what you’re doing.
I’ll bring the materials, show you where to start and give you enough guidance to get going. Then you get to experiment, play, change your mind, make something a little wonky and see where it takes you.
Come learn a new technique, meet lovely people and spend a few hours doing something purely for yourself.
Use the good supplies.
Try the thing.
Make it imperfect.
Messy Makes - permission to play.
