Do you love the playful, hands-on joy of collage and want to see your textures come alive in print?
Join your tutor Rachael Lee for a fun class where you’ll use the art of collage to make expressive collagraph plates and explore the rich world of printmaking.
Collagraph is a printmaking method where you build a plate by attaching textured materials to a firm surface, creating a rich matrix of shapes and tones for printing.
In this introductory session you'll focus on plate making - learning how different materials create surprising marks, tones, and textures, and building a tactile library you can draw on when developing future collagraph imagery.
What you'll learn during the workshop:
  • Plate preparation - experiment with different cardstocks and compare the marks they create
  • Tonal effects - the principles of how to create a variety of tonal effects
  • How to build texture - what materials to use and ways of adhering materials onto the printing plate
  • Inking and printing techniques - use colour and wiping methods to reveal gorgeous detail
You’ll gain a deeper understanding of what makes a strong collagraph, as well as the confidence and skills to continue making collagraph plates at home and to grow your personal vocabulary of textures and tones.
And if you’re excited to keep going, you can take your collagraphs to the next level at Rachael’s one-day Collagraph class on Saturday, 3 October where the focus is on making multiple plates to create multi-layered prints.

The studio is located in a commercial complex on the corner of Earnshaw Road and Depot Street, near the old Golden Circle Cannery. As you enter the complex, look for the number #13 and the Art from the Urban Wilderness signs. There are 3 onsite car parks. During the week, we recommend you park on the road and walk up the driveway. If you have lots of gear you can drop it off and then park. If you need to park close to the door for accessibility reasons, let us know prior so we can reserve a park for you. On weekends or after hours, you can park within the complex in a marked car parking bay (not in front of roller doors), as its very quiet then.

Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting. By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.
