Working by hand, you'll raise her portrait out of a sheet of aluminium, then bring her to life with colour, paper flowers, and collage. No drawing or metalwork experience is needed—just a willingness to have a go and time to enjoy it.
What we'll cover:
  • The story behind the skull—a short, friendly introduction to Día de Muertos and where La Catrina comes from
  • Drawing your design—sketch your own Catrina at your own pace
  • Embossing the metal—transfer your design and gently raise it in relief until it catches the light
  • Bringing her to life—add colour, flowers, and collage until she feels like yours

Hi, I'm Ligy, a visual artist working in metal on the Fraser Coast.
I practise two distinct metal techniques: chasing and piercing, where designs are cut and worked into the metal, and embossing, where patterns are raised in relief from the surface.
My love of metalwork began years ago in Algeria, where I fell in love with dinanderie, the traditional art of decorated metal. That inspiration blends with the metal traditions of my Mexican background and a rich multicultural story (Mexico, Panama, Cuba and now Australia). I trained in the arts too: a Minor in Arts, a Major in Graphic Design and a certificate in silversmithing, plus ceramic painting and mosaic.
My pieces draw on animals, Mexican milagritos and patterns from embroidery traditions around the world, reimagined in metal. In my classes, you'll learn the technique step by step, no experience needed. As a former university French professor, I love teaching: I'm patient, clear and encouraging, and I want you to leave with something beautiful that you made yourself.
Come along, bring your curiosity, and take home your own piece of metal art.
