  • 5/5 from Ruth Leonie Wagner, attended Jun 2026: I liked learning to control the wax, and learning about how the dyes, fixatives work. A very patient tracher.
  • 5/5 from Rebecca Enright, attended Jan 2026: Arie has a wealth of knowledge of not only the batik method, but also the fascinating history and cultural importance of batik. It was so much fun learning to batik and at the end we were able to take home the fabric panel we made, which will make a fabulous cushion cover. Or you could just hang it your wall for everyone to admire! Ariel is a very kind instructor and a lot of fun to hang out with. I would highly recommend this class to anyone that has an interest in batik, or is just wanting to learn and have a go at something new. For groups of friends it makes a much more interesting alternative to things like paint and sip classes. Thank you so much Arie :)
  • 5/5 from Mandi Griffith, attended Jan 2026: With no experience of Batik and with limited artistic abillity my husband and I attended this class on the weekend. The teacher, Arie is a delight. He explained the process throughly, giving insights into Indonesian culture and the history of Batik which was facinating. Arie helped us with our designs and was patient and fun as our creations materialised. I would absolutely recommend this class to others. My only other comment is that Arie charges way too little; the course is easily worth at least twice as much. A wonderful experience.
  • 5/5 from Catherine Kahler, attended Jan 2026: This class was really fantastic! Arie has such a depth of knowledge and experience with Batik, so much more than just learning technique. We created a piece from start to finish and also learned about tradition, culture, meaning behind this beautiful art. Arie was so very generous with his knowledge and help, I can’t recommend highly enough!!! Thank you Arie!!!

Lukman Batik Workshop

5.0 (4)

Hi, call me Arie. I am from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Currently, I live in Brisbane. Back in my hometown, I open a batik workshop named Lukman Batik Workshop.
The workshop in Yogyakarta is still running while I am away since I have a team backing me up there.
Now, while I am in Brisbane, I also want to share my knowledge about making batik with the traditional Javanese wax method.
