Using your mosaic tools

Using Your Mosaic Tools

Sandy begins with an inspiring slideshow of smalti mosaics, then you jump straight into a hands‑on session using the tools and tesserae. Every student gets personal guidance, and the workshop atmosphere is lively and supportive. Enjoy choosing from dozens of smalti shades to create your bird, then shape your tesserae using the Italian hammer, hardie, and Leponitt wheeled nippers to achieve crisp cuts, refined edges, and the surface details that define your mosaic style. This is a very hands-on, value-packed mosaic workshop.

Tint your thinset (CBA) adhesive

Tint Your Thinset (CBA) Adhesive

Smalti mosaics are not often grouted, so learning to tint your adhesives is a game‑changer. Sandy shows you how to tone your thinset to harmonise with your smalti and other tesserae. Bag and pipe it, or spread with tools — it’s fun, expressive, and the results add instant depth and character to your mosaic.

Shape your stone and smalti

Shape Your Stone and Smalti

You’ll soon be shaping your stone and smalti using the Italian hammer and hardie. Sandy demonstrates how to handle the tools with ease, guiding you to create the shapes and textured surfaces that bring life and character to your mosaic.

Prepare Your Bird & Background

Prepare Your Bird & Background

After shaping and adhering your stone border, Sandy shows you how to apply your pattern to the MOSboard base using Prep Australia Glue. You choose your smalti shades for your bird, then explore background options — stone, slate, stained glass, wine‑bottle glass, or other mixed media — to build the mood and magic of your mosaic.

Andamento & Opus techniques

Andamento & Opus Techniques

Discover the beauty of shaping andamento—the rhythm and movement of your mosaic—by using both modern and traditional Opus techniques. The way you place and angle your tesserae to fill backgrounds, sweep around curves, and follow contours gives your mosaic its personality, energy, and visual pulse.

Finish in class or take home to complete!

Finish in Class or Take Home to Complete

Once the front of your mosaic has cured, you can decorate the back with mirror, slate, stained glass, or any mixed media you love — or simply paint or render it for a clean finish. Your mobile already includes a pre‑drilled hanging hole, so you can display it undercover, outdoors, or in the garden with ease.
