Sharpening for Woodworkers: Chisels and Plane Iron Class

Sharpening is a gateway drug for fine woodworking.But "sharp enough" depends on what you are doing. A chisel used for delicate paring has different demands from one used for chopping a mortise; a smoothing plane asks something different of its edge from a tool doing heavier work.This one-day class focuses on sharpening chisels and plane irons, and on developing the judgement to know what a good edge looks and feels like, how to achieve it reliably, and how to maintain it efficiently.We’ll explore the principles behind sharpening as well as a range of techniques and sharpening media. You’ll learn about preparing the backs of tools, establishing and maintaining bevels, grinding and honing, and recognising when an edge needs attention.There are many stones, systems, angles, jigs, and gadgets available to woodworkers. This class isn’t about converting you to one particular system. Instead, you’ll develop an understanding of what is happening at the cutting edge so you can evaluate different approaches and find a sharpening practice that works for you.The workshop is practical and hands-on. All sharpening stones and equipment are provided, and you are welcome to bring your own chisels and plane irons so we can look at their condition and discuss what they need.The class is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced woodworkers wanting to improve the consistency of their sharpening. With a maximum of four participants, there is plenty of opportunity for individual guidance.The aim is simple: to leave with a sharpening method you understand, can repeat, and can adapt to the work you want to do.Moonlite Studios offers safe, welcoming, and inclusive classes.
