From quirky patterns to intricate illustrations, choose your favourite colours and designs and get lost in the process of painting your own pottery. These Melbourne workshops are held in cosy ceramic studios all across the city and run by experienced potters and makers. Discover 10+ pottery painting classes, perfect if you're searching for Christmas gift ideas in 2026 or relaxing things to do this weekend.
Unwind with pottery painting in Melbourne near you
If you're looking for a unique and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon in Melbourne, pottery painting might just be the perfect activity for you. There are plenty of studios around Melbourne where you can paint your own pottery, and the options are endless - from mugs and bowls to figurines and vases. Learn how to paint a planter, dog bowl or platter at 2 Mayfield Studio in Abbotsford or socialise at a ceramic painting and sip class with Diana Ceramic in Burwood.
Not only is this a great way to exercise your creativity, but it's also a relaxing and meditative experience. You'll get lost in the process of selecting colours, painting designs, and adding finishing touches. And when you're done, you'll have a beautiful piece of art that's all your own!
One of the best things about pottery painting is that it's accessible to everyone - no matter your age or skill level. Whether you're an experienced artist or have never picked up a paintbrush before, everyone is welcome to attend and you're guaranteed to finish up with something you'll love. Plus, you might just discover a new creative hobby for 2026.
What to expect at ceramic painting and glazing classes in Melbourne
In a Melbourne pottery painting class, you'll pick from a provided bisque-fired ceramic, which is ready to be decorated by you! Dependent on the studio where you attend the class, you can pick from mugs, plates, pots or more, to paint to your liking. With a collection of underglaze colours to choose from, you'll be able to bring your designs to life with just a paintbrush!
This is a super relaxing process and you'll have plenty of time to socialise with friends or other like-minded creatives, enjoy some drinks and nibbles and simply switch off throughout the workshop. At the end, you will leave your decorated ceramics at the studio for your teacher to apply a final clear glaze before firing the pieces to ensure they are fully functional, including food and dishwasher-safe. Return a week or so later to pick up your completed piece or organise postage with the teacher on the day.
The main idea of ceramic painting and glazing classes is that you can explore your creativity. Your experienced pottery painting instructor will walk you through the basics and offer some feedback throughout the class, but you’ll have plenty of freedom to explore different designs.
Searching for kids activities in Melbourne? Our amazing teachers also offer ceramic painting for kids, designed for them to have some fun and play with paints in a new way! Ceramic painting classes are also perfect for hens parties, birthday parties or Christmas presents. Given the relaxing nature of the medium, they’re also great team bonding activities for any workplace welling program!

Discover why pottery painting is so popular in 2026
In Melbourne, there are plenty of places where you can paint your own pottery. From cosy cafes to dedicated ceramic studios, there's something for everyone. And the best part? You don't need any prior experience or skills to get started—just an open mind and a willingness to try something new.
So why has pottery painting become so popular in 2026? Well, for starters, it's a great way to unwind and de-stress. In today's fast-paced world, we all need a little bit of time out to relax and recharge our batteries. And what better way to do that than by getting lost in your own creativity?
Pottery painting is also a great way to socialise with friends and meet new ones too! Grab some friends or come along solo to one of Melbourne's many paint-your-own-pottery studios. You'll have a blast creating together, chatting away while you paint.
And let's not forget about the end result—a beautiful piece of art that you can take home with you! Whether it's a mug, bowl, vase or figurine, your finished piece will be completely unique and personal to you.
So if you're looking for things to do in Melbourne that are both fun and uplifting, then give pottery painting a go this year!
