arrow_right_alt arrow_downward- Glaze with Local History: Work with hyper-local materials sourced directly from the surrounding landscape and historical icon—including 50-year-old Melbourne tram ash (retrieved straight from Tram 772’s original ashtrays), Puffing Billy coal ash, local sands and wild clays blended into dependable, studio-tested glaze recipes.
- Underglaze & Custom Finishes: Express your personal style using vibrant coloured underglazes (clear-glazed by Karen before firing) or experiment with raw, original wild glaze applications.
- Learn the Art of Glaze Making: Gain insight into the chemistry, story and alchemy behind formulating custom glazes from raw geological and historical materials.
- Unique Tram Studio Setting: Soak in the atmosphere of creating inside a classic vintage Melbourne tram.
- Story Art Workshop Attendees: If you are returning after a previous Story Art class, your piece is already prepared with mid-fire stoneware and ready to glaze!
- Stoneware Clay: Can be decorated with our custom wild glazes and fired to Cone 6.
- Earthenware Clay: Can only be decorated with coloured underglaze (fired separately at lower temperatures). Earthenware cannot be fired to Cone 6—doing so will melt the piece into a puddle inside the kiln.

Your teacher
Hi, I’m Karen Alsop! I am a world renowned photographic artist. But in recent years clay has become my creative adventure. There’s nothing I love more than taking wild local clay, Puffing Billy ash, and reclaimed materials and turning them into unique, story-filled pieces. Every texture, every imperfection, tells a story, and I love helping others discover that magic for themselves.I’ve taught hundreds of students across various art forms, run team workshops, and guided first-time enthusiasts to confident creators. In my classes, it’s all about exploring your creativity, having fun, and leaving with something you’re proud of.When I’m not teaching, I run the Story Art Gallery inside Melbourne’s historic Tram 772, where my ceramics, photography, and mixed media creations come together, and I lead The Heart Project, helping volunteers create portraits for children in hospitals. Art isn’t just what I do—it’s how I connect, create, and celebrate life.Join me in a class and experience the joy of shaping clay, telling your story, and making something truly yours.
