Learn foundation skills to create your first project and create a knitted headband or bookmark or start a granny square crochet blanket or cushion.
In this private one-on-one two session course, you will learn the foundation skills of crochet or knitting with your personal tutor and creative mentor, Sarah. Sarah is a qualified teacher and is trained in Steiner handwork teaching methods, making learning fun and easy for all ages.
Lessons are held at our creative studio in Currumbin Valley and are designed for complete beginners (kids and adults). Choose between crocheting or knitting!
Lesson one provides the foundation skills, and you can return after some practice and build more skills including pattern reading to start your first project with confidence.
These foundation lessons include everything you need to know to get started. It includes all materials and a take-home kit of needles/crochet stick, a ball of yarn, written instructions, and a pattern.
Crochet course overview: Learn to make a Granny square blanket or cushion:
Session 1 (90 min) Foundation skills)
  • How to hold and manipulate the yarn and create chains.
  • Moving into learning double and treble crochet stitches, slip stitch, and how to corner and work stitches in a square.
Session 2 (90 min)
After some take-home practise, you will be confident in knitting basic stitches and progress to:
  • How to change yarn colour
  • How to read a basic pattern for a granny square
  • Troubleshooting.
  • Start your first project. Blanket or cushion.
  • Advice on possible beginner projects to create.
  • How to create edging on a blanket.
  • Possibilities of next projects to extend your skills
By the end of the class, you will become confident in creating granny squares, a foundation skill to open the door to creative crochet possibilities.
Knitting course overview: Learn to make a knitted headband or bookmark:
Session 1- Intro to knitting
  • How to hold and manipulate needles
  • Intro to tools and equipment.
  • Learn knit stitch in straight rows
  • Troubleshooting
Session 2
After some take-home practise, you will be confident in knitting basic stitches and progress to:
  • How to cast on and off your work.
  • How to read and follow a pattern for a bookmark or headband
  • How to change yarn colours and weave in ends.
  • Advice on other beginner projects to extend your skills.
By the end of the two sessions, you will feel confident to create your complete your first small project.
You will receive an invitation to the free community stitch and chai club held at the studio, where you can continue your project and meet other creatives.

Knowledge required
This is a foundation class. No prior knowledge or skills are required.
What to bring
  • Practise wool is provided for Session 1. You will need to choose and bring your own choice of yarn for your project in session 2 (advice supplied on suitable yarn types and thickness).
  • There is an onsite cafe if you would like to purchase snacks, food, or additional beverages.
Session repeats

After the first session, subsequent sessions can be arranged with the teacher, at a time that suits you.

Suitable for

Suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 8 years old).

An adult must accompany any attending kids. The adult may observe at the class for free.
