Welcome to our colourful & cosy Brunswick studio, where Max and Zoe guide you through a thoughtfully designed collage workshop focused on creativity, experimentation, and self-expression. Over the past five years, we’ve carefully refined this experience to welcome all creative backgrounds, abilities, and levels of confidence.
Rather than working from a set example, we introduce you to the mindset, techniques, and creative approaches used to develop original collage pieces using our extensive collection of second-hand, recycled, and donated materials. Along the way, you’ll also explore our unique glue-free collage process, allowing you to freely remix, rearrange, and document multiple evolving artworks throughout the session.
As an independent artist-run studio, That Paper Joint exists somewhere between a working collage studio, creative workshop, and curated retail space, united by a shared love of paper, image-making, and creative community.
At That Paper Joint, we believe creativity flourishes when people feel supported, relaxed, and free to experiment without pressure or perfectionism. Whether you’re a practising artist or reconnecting with creativity for the first time in years, this workshop is designed to help you feel comfortable, inspired, and surprised by what you can make.
What you'll get
An introduction to collage and the various styles and techniques to get you inspired and give you ideas before getting started.
A five-part process to guide you through your creative experience, from ‘mining’ for images, cutting, arranging, and finally image capturing (glueing/scanning). You’ll also have plenty of one-on-one time with Max, for idea generation, advice and collaboration.
A huge array of vintage books, contemporary magazines, and paper ephemera to cut from and access to our book wall for those extra special pieces! All tools are provided and you’re also welcome to bring along any extra bits and pieces from home that you’d like to use.
Access to view and read from our comprehensive reference library of collage books, magazines & compendiums. These reference materials are filled with inspiration and ideas from some of the worlds leading, contemporary artists, working within the medium.
A spread of light refreshments and snacks from local stores and cafes to keep you going throughout the creative process, including:
  • Friday Evenings: Pick and nibble on a delicious Cheeseboard spread with equally delicious Vegan and Gluten-Free options from local cheese shop, Harper and Blohm, to go perfectly with your BYO beverages.
  • Saturday & Sunday Mornings: Relax and enjoy a nice cup of tea, filter coffee, or soda, whilst tucking into some tasty pastries, fresh fruit, and Vegan/Gluten-Free snacks.
Your very own original artwork (or two, or three, or more!)
High-Res, digital, scanned copies of all your favourite creations sent to your email after the session.
A take-home bag for your leftover paper pieces and any scraps you wish to take, to continue the fun at home. Don't be shy, we encourage you to take some extra paper home.
An opportunity to join our growing community of collagists! By attending one of our Guided Cut & Paste Collage Workshops, you'll have completed the necessary inductions, in order to come back more frequently, as a 'Self-Guided-Guest', which are our sessions, designed for those who wish to come back more frequently to use our studio space.
