Chris and Janae have been growing dahlias since they first started their flower farm in 2016 and are thrilled to be able to offer our dahlia dividing workshop again this winter, where you will go home with a collection of 10 different tubers for your own garden! Each person will dig and divide a clump of dahlia tubers while learning everything you need to know about dahlias and meeting other dahlia lovers. We will have hot drinks to keep us warm and Chris’ famous pumpkin pie and other goodies to keep us going.
Chris and Janae will explain everything you need to know to grow your own healthy dahlia patch from the beginning, right through to planting and caring for your blooms. We will start by explaining how to dig the dahlias, wash them, understand where to look for the “eye, ” divide the dahlia tubers, and which tools we like to use. We’ll also talk about storing the dahlias so that they stay healthy through winter, when to plant your dahlia tubers for your climate, how we plant them, what we feed our dahlias for healthy blooms, explain what “pinching out” means and why we do it, and finally how to enjoy your dahlias in your home.
We will also be discussing whether or not you can “overwinter” or perennialize your dahlias. What are the pros and cons of doing this?
Finally, we will end the workshop with a tour around our working flower farm and for you to ask as many questions as you like along the way. Chris and I are now in our 6th growing season and we grow over 50 varieties of flowers on our farm.
