Drawing and Portraiture Course

From mastering facial features to creating shadows and undertaking observational drawing, artist Lindsay McDougall will take students through the knowledge and skills needed to practice art.

This program runs on Tuesdays from 7 May—25 June, 6—8pm.

In this course you will learn:
— An overview of materials for better results
— The dimensions and proportions of the head and face
— How to create a likeness of your subject
— Tips and hints to mastering facial features, eyes, nose, mouth, ears and eyebrows
— Shading and shadowing to create realism and interest
— Understanding lighting for life drawing and working with photos
— Understanding planes and simplified shapes
— Creative processes to render portraits that are not just a likeness but have artistic merit
— Exercises to develop drawing skills to develop your skills and techniques in observational drawing
— Analysis and breakdown of individual underlying features

About the tutor:
Melbourne artist Lindsay McDougall is skilled in portraiture and landscape and has an attractive and emotion provoking style. Using many different mediums, including watercolour, acrylics, pencil and charcoal, he strives to strive to create work that captivates the viewer rather than just a direct copy of the subject. His recent works lean more towards watercolour and acrylics, utilising a similar wash technique as watercolour and blending this with the medium’s opaque nature. His teaching style is to focus on developing techniques that provide students with the knowledge to become creative artists in their own right.

No prior experience required.
  Materials to use, completed artworks to take home.
  Bring in photos of a loved one that can be used to create a personal portrait by the end of the program.
 

This class series runs over 8 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.
