What you'll do

Blocking in the biggest shapes gives a good over all understanding of how the puzzle pieces fit together.
Block In
Discover the technique of block-in, drawing big shapes to smaller shapes and putting the puzzle together.
Divide Light and Shadow
Divide light and shadow, creating a no tan drawing.
Refine the Portrait
Create a 5 value scale. Divide the drawing from darkest to lightest values as you refine smaller and smaller shapes, which creates features.
You'll add the finishing touches to your drawing and take home a unique artwork.

Your teacher
Pilar de la Torre is a contemporary naturalist/realist artist based in Melbourne, Victoria. Her passion is drawing and painting, mainly in oils and watercolours. She works across all genres: portrait, figure, interiors, still life, and landscape. Pilar’s philosophy is the pursuit of constant improvement of her skills, which she does by continual development. She shares her passion by teaching. Pilar has been a finalist in many awards, including the Lethbridge 20000 Small Art Award (2025, 2024, 2023), Fortyfivedownstairs Emerging Artist Award 2024, Bluethumb Prize, the SBS Portrait Prize, Kennedy Art Prize, and AME Bale Travelling Scholarship, including the drawing and painting prize. She was also the Australian representative to the Russian Academy of Art, Saint Petersburg 2019, selected by the Russian Academy faculty, and many other awards. Pilar has had four solo exhibitions and has been involved in numerous group exhibitions.
