5 x 2 hours Class size 10 to 12 guests

$379 ($399 per guest when you book for 10+ guests, $379/guest for 10+ guests)

Join this sewing course in Melbourne and learn how to make a handbag or shoulder bag using a domestic sewing machine!
Personalise the size, style, materials, pockets, attachments and strap to your liking. Then you'll have the skills to do it again and again and again.
Our tailored teaching process is designed to prompt creativity and help guide you through the bag design process. From creative inception right through to finishing your last seam, we will guide you step by step through the process so you're confident to go out upcycling on your own.
Throughout the course, we will cover several sewing techniques and two methods of bag construction. Then we guide you through the design thinking and decision-making processes to turn one-off waste materials into functional carry wear.
Over the five weeks, you learn the following skills:
  • Sewing fundamentals (including sewing machine troubleshooting)
  • Textile upcycling basics (designing with waste, reusing scraps, repairing damages)
  • Design thinking (reimagining material uses, bringing value to overlooked materials)
  • Bag pattern making (how to break down a shape into flats)
  • Textile edge finishing techniques for different materials
  • Bag lining techniques for different materials
  • Strap design and finishing for different materials
  • Pocket design and construction
By the end of the course, you can take home your new handbag or shoulder bag to wear proudly!
Waste materials: We have a LOT of overlooked materials here at the studio. If you have a particular material you would like to upcycle, please bring it in! We love exploring new materials. Otherwise, we have an abundance of banners, denim, sleeping bags, upholstery fabric, tarps, workwear, and other random goodies here. Note: if you would like to use soft plastic in your design, you can create your own at home with our online tutorial and bring it into class (you won't need this material until week 3). All leftover textiles and offcuts are externally recycled with UPPAREL.
Who this class is for: Whether you are curious about upcycling or you're a seasoned veteran, this course is designed for all skill levels to thrive. Each class has two teachers guiding you through the processes, but you're in control of how much detail and complexity you want to include. It's your bag, your design, they're your new skills!
Cancellations: We offer a refund policy up until 7 days prior to the semester starting. If the cancellation is within this 7-day window, we will release the ticket and refund your amount pending its resale. No refunds will be processed once the semester has started.

  • 5/5 from Jennifer Green, attended Jul 2025: This class was just so enjoyable. The teachers went out of thier way to help you. The other class members were engaging and keen to learn as well. It was a big travel for me from Bunyip but well worth it. I am hoping for some more classes to be added that will offer even more learning so I can attend these.
  • 5/5 from Elena Suares, attended Feb 2025: I had an amazing experience creating my own personalized bag from recycled materials. The instructors were very knowledgeable about the craft of bag-making, and they provided clear explanations and assistance throughout the process. I learned a lot from the class. Before attending, I never considered the idea of turning an old pair of jeans into a fashionable bag. It was truly inspiring!
