Upon arrival, you will be wowed by a beautifully landscaped property situated up high with vistas over the paddocks beyond. Enjoy the vast space and the smell of the lemon-scented gums and take in the surroundings which include a large Anagama Woodfire Kiln and a carefully curated selection of garden sculptures made by expert fire master, Jack Latti.

You will then arrive at the pottery studio, settle in with a cup of tea or coffee and have a tour and a discussion about the woodfire process with particular emphasis on the glaze surface unique to firing with wood.

With time to get our hands on some clay, we will take this opportunity to talk about different clay types with respect to wood firing. Armed with this knowledge, you will experiment with the clays provided. Inspiration can be found from ample examples of work on display.

The aim of the day is to make three pieces to be fired inside the Anagama kiln, which is fired two times a year for 100 hours.

By the end, you will leave this experience inspired and with your eyes open to the possibilities of the wood firing process and the anticipation of the results of your work to be later picked up.

Your teacher

Jack has professionally worked in the ceramic industry since the mid 1990s. Wood firing became a passion in recent years. He focuses on three main ranges of work from sculptural pieces, functional table ware and his iconic vessels for plants.
After a decade of working between his studio and within the studios of esteemed wood fire potters. Jack officially joined the woodfire community when he built his Anagama kiln at studio Nioka in Research VIC.
Studio Nioka is situated on a hilltop 5 acre property with breathtaking views of the Kinglake ranges. The essence of this creative space is the passing on of knowledge, sharing ideas and connecting with likeminded people.
