If you've ever wondered what to do with all those leftover craft materials — old cards, fabric scraps, ribbons, buttons, lace, beautiful papers and other little treasures — then look no further than junk journalling!
A junk journal can be endlessly added to, making it a wonderfully creative and inexpensive hobby. With no strict rules, it's the perfect way to experiment, play with different materials and discover endless ways to transform everyday scraps and forgotten treasures into beautiful journal pages.
Make a Junk Journal:
We'll begin by hand-making our own soft-cover junk journal using hand-dyed and intentionally distressed papers, giving your journal a wonderfully old-fashioned quality.
You'll design your cover using vintage stamps and distressed inks before adding beautiful details such as stitching, lace, buttons and trinkets to create a one-of-a-kind journal that's uniquely yours.
Your finished journal will be sturdy enough for all kinds of creative pursuits, including writing, sketching, painting, memory keeping and, of course, housing all the wonderful vintage ephemera we'll explore in the second half of the workshop.
Create Junk Journal Pages:
In the second half of the workshop, we dive into our huge treasure trove of ephemera and begin bringing your journal pages to life.
You'll create beautiful pages, pockets, tags and tuck spots using vintage images, stamps, paints, stencils, buttons, ribbons, lace, stamped pieces, doilies, old text, sheet music and more. Learn how to layer, distress and combine these wonderful materials to create richly detailed pages filled with vintage character and the charm of yesteryear.
Have fun experimenting with different combinations and creating pages inspired by old advertising, luggage tags, sewing cards, handwritten letters, vintage imagery and the wonderfully time-worn book pages you might have discovered tucked away in your grandma's cupboards.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have handcrafted your own beautiful junk journal and created a collection of vintage-inspired pages, pockets, tags and embellishments to begin filling it.
Best of all, you'll leave with plenty of ideas and techniques to continue adding to your journal at home — and perhaps a wonderfully addictive new hobby!
