Ready to get hooked?
Welcome to Odd the Hook! I'm Janine, a self-confessed yarn addict who believes creativity grows through curiosity, experimentation, and a willingness to make wonderfully wonky mistakes.
This relaxed, beginner-friendly class is designed for kids aged 10+ who want to learn something new, get creative, and discover what they can make with a hook and some yarn.
No experience needed! We'll start with the basics and learn how to hold a hook, manage yarn, make stitches, and explore how shapes come together. With plenty of guidance and encouragement, kids can build their skills, experiment with ideas, and learn to solve little stitch puzzles along the way.
There's no pressure to get everything perfect. Wonky stitches and unexpected shapes are all part of the fun!
What we'll cover:
  • Getting comfortable with a crochet hook and yarn
  • Making chains and single crochet stitches
  • Exploring how stitches form shapes
  • Building confidence through creativity and experimentation
Class details:
  • Age: Best suited to kids aged 10+
  • Experience: Complete beginners welcome
  • Materials: All yarn, hooks, and supplies provided
  • Group size: Limited places for plenty of individual guidance
A little about Janine:
I've been crocheting for more than ten years, and I'm a fantasy and pop-culture nerd with an overflowing yarn stash and a habit of looking at just about anything and asking, "How could I crochet that?"
My classes focus on learning how crochet works, not just following a pattern. I want every young maker to feel confident trying new things, figuring things out, and making something their own.
Progress beats perfection. Every. Single. Time.

Hi I'm Janine, Chief Yarn Addict & Founder
My crochet journey started 10 years ago, and even after a decade with a hook in my hand, I am still learning, experimenting, and finding new ways to be creative every day.
I know firsthand how exhausting the trap of perfectionism can be. The fear of making a mistake can freeze your creativity and take the fun out of learning.
That is why I created Odd the Hook. I wanted to build a patient, welcoming space that gives kids the skills and confidence to never feel locked into a right way of being creative. They shouldn't need their work to match a picture of a finished product to feel proud of what they've made.
Instead of teaching strictly to rigid instructions, my classes guide students through core techniques and creative design challenges. We explore color, shape, forming, and scaling, giving young makers the freedom to design their own unique creations.
Zero Fear of Failure: We actively celebrate the messy, the wonky, and the mystery shapes.
Skills Over Patterns: Students learn how crochet actually works so they can create without boundaries.
Peace of Mind for Parents
Odd the Hook is a fully compliant and insured local business:
QLD Blue Card: Current, verified Working with Children check cleared.
Fully Insured: Comprehensive Public Liability insurance for all home and venue classes.
Grown-Ups Welcome: Most classes are designed for parents to stay, learn, and create right alongside their child
