What you'll do
Looking for fun kids indoor activities to keep the kids occupied and help them learn and develop their creative skills? Making koinobori fish for a kids' birthday party or celebration is a perfect fun activity, especially when you can't meet up in person or want to involve friends and relatives interstate.
Koinobori fish are traditionally made for children's day in Japan on May 5th. Landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori from April to early May to honour children in the hope they will grow up healthy and strong in the future. So let's make them together to provide us with a powerful symbol during this difficult time, plus they make things to do at home really beneficial to your kids.
In this live online class, you will:
- Make two koinobori fish to hang in your windows, to send out a message that you are doing OK!
- Learn how to make a koi fish based on the traditional Japanese koinobori which translates as 'carp streamers'.
- Work with a young person to assist them to construct their fish (this is a great adult/child project).
Knowledge required
No prior knowledge but children will need an adult to help.
What you'll get in your craft kit
Materials for four koinobori fish, including:- Four craft cardboard rolls
- Tissue paper circles
- Coloured papers
- Glass pebbles
- Ribbons
- Twine
- Double-sided tape for eyes
- Cut out shapes for decorating
- Glue stick
- Sticky tape

I have had the best life ever, following my passions. I have worked as a script editor and writer and been a course leader and senior lecturer in the UK in film and TV and before that I was an illustrator and artist.

I did the Koinobori Fish workshop run by Pamela today with my 2 grandsons aged 3 & 5yrs. It was a lot of fun and interesting to learn of the Japanese custom of hanging them at the ground of their home to bring health and prosperity to children. The craft elements were supplied ahead of time with plenty for the class and extras to make more later. There was lots of variety to allow for individual creativity.
