  • 5/5 from Claudia Lang, attended Sep 2026: Catherine was a stellar teacher - the class was well-paced, thorough and calm but we covered plenty of ground. I feel really energised about continuing to learn from here. A great foundational class.
  • 5/5 from Vicki Hunt, attended Aug 2026: Dragged my 40 year old sewing machine in on the train from Woodend to finally learn how to use it properly. Had a ball, made a great bag, met lovely people and want to learn more from Ali. Will definately be back for more lessons. Vicki

  • 5/5 from Jess Knight, attended May 2026: Such a great class! I couldn’t believe I left with a completed tote bag and the confidence to go off and buy a sewing machine. 10/10
  • 5/5 from Suzie Orelli, attended May 2026: A great class, very easy to follow and taught at a good pace. I would highly recommend this class.
  • 5/5 from Tracey Dawe, attended May 2026: Catherine was fantastic, I had the best day at this beginner's class.
  • 5/5 from Matthew Hunt, attended Mar 2026: Phenomenal class, and delivers on its promise. From beginner level machine operation to walking out with a completed project, it was fantastic. Jo was a thoughtful, kind, patient and super helpful teacher. She attended to every problem and helped guide eveyone through whatever they needed to get the project done. As a male learning to sew, there are few places in Melbourne that will take you on or the course content doesn't suit. From that respect, this course was wonderful and I'd highly recommend it.
  • 5/5 from Jan Howard, attended Dec 2025: Our teacher Gaye was excellent; knowledgeable and helpful. The class was well organised and I learnt a lot. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day.
  • 5/5 from Grace Orange, attended Sep 2025: Class was well paced for beginners. Gaye really knows her stuff and explained everything very well. Looking forward to coming again.
  • 5/5 from Annette Webb, attended Apr 2025: Great teacher and made a wonderful tote bag
  • 5/5 from Bill Murphy, attended Jan 2025: Jo was fantastic, taught us how to use a machine, got us going and we were making stuff in an hour
  • 4/5 from Jo Michling, attended Jan 2025: Gaye creates a super friendly vibe in the room and all other participants were helpful and supportive! I loved that you bring home your own bag - makes learning so much more fun. Personally, I think the class was a bit rushed though and you really had to learn quick and work quick in order to get everything done in the short time we had. I would recommend extending the class to 6h to ensure more time to learn terms of the machine, go through the steps thoroughly and allow time to make mistakes without being completely behind everyone else and having to rush in the end. At some point I lost track of the different steps, didn’t have enough time to write things down, and Gaye did certain steps for me as we were short of time. I wish there would have been more time to not rush through it and I hope this feedback can be taken on for the next classes :)
  • 5/5 from Milla Hapsari, attended Dec 2024: As an absolute beginner, I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Gaye is an excellent teacher and I learned heaps in one day. Can't wait to take a follow up class!
  • 4/5 from Karine Li, attended Dec 2024: Great class, but I thought I would have some basic instructions or step by step take away notes. It would have been good for those trying to build on those skills and who want to keep practising at home. I did the class yesterday but today I cannot even remember the steps. It's disappointing. Basic step-by-step notes to prompt or remind would have been great. Now I'm stuck and disappointed.
  • 5/5 from Sandy Tai, attended Mar 2024: SO MUCH FUN I went in not knowing anything and came out confident in following a tutorial/instructions. Jo was a fantastic and patient teacher! I just had so much fun, feel really good in myself and made some new friends. I’ve already booked in for another workshop there. Just brilliant!
  • 5/5 from Emmy Ainslie, attended Sep 2023: lovely teacher, friendly class, and a really awesome place to work in! I had a great time and learned some really useful skills. I felt confident leaving the class knowing that I’d be able to use what I learned in class for my own personal projects. (attached image is the bag i made!)

At SOSU, we believe that sewing is a wonderful life skill, and we want to share it with you. Learning how to alter and mend the things that you have as well as learning the skills to create your own gorgeous garments will help you to be more creative and sustainable. We offer a wide range of full and half-day workshops or ongoing courses that will build, refresh or consolidate your sewing skills. We have a great mix of beginner and skilled sewists of all ages learning at our school.
We can also arrange private lessons for those that learn better one-on-one. When it’s just you and your teacher you can really tackle that special project with confidence.
Our back story: The School of Sewing & Upcycling was established in 2015. Set up in a small shop in Buckley Street, Footscray, where Gaye (the original owner) and her team shared their love of sewing with aspiring and experienced sewists alike.
In February 2023, Zoë took over the business from Gaye (who still teaches) and in May 2023 SOSU moved into their current home in Whitehall Street, Footscray.
Zoë and her team of friendly and skilled teachers look forward to welcoming you (or your ClassBento gift recipients) into their space to unlock creativity, develop sustainable habits, and master skills that will last a lifetime!
