Let’s Start with Your Image or Photo

Let's Start with Your Image or Photo

* Bring along a photo of yourself you want to create into the portrait. Here’s me in the photo.
* also make a colour print of your face that’s between 4cm-5cm (this will become clear below) and bring it along
* This will become the foundation you begin with
* You’ll be shown examples of Klimt’s paintings and his style and techniques will be described
* You’ll be guided step by step throughout the stages that follow

Make outlines on the canvas of the key shapes block off in your photo

Make Outlines on the Canvas of the Key Shapes Block Off in Your Photo

* you’ll be mapping out how you want to block out your composition using your photo as a guide, this is where you’ll be drawing and painting all your decorative patterns

Add colour to each of the shapes & add your face

Add Colour to Each of the Shapes & Add Your Face

* choose your colour combinations that will dominate and paint each section with the chosen colour in acrylic paint
* when you’re done sit back and look at the work checking whether you thinking the colours work well together
* next you insert your face and I suggest two options:
1) you can try to paint your face as best you can - you’ll be surprised at how much better this can look than you think
2) or you can cut out the colour print out of your face (make sure you print on thick paper) and paste it to the canvas

Outline your decorative scheme

Outline Your Decorative Scheme

* using acrylic paint pens provided you’ll begin to draw your decorative scheme across the painting
* don’t worry if it’s not too precise at this stage, you’ll be going over your lines again later with your final colour of choice

The little gems

The Little Gems

* now you begin creating all the minute patterns and decorations across the composition painting each in different colours
* examples of some of Klimt’s favourite patterns will be circulated and you can use these or make up your own

Finishing touches

Finishing Touches

* apply final touches, fix stray lines, messy colours, unfinished patterns
* this whole process is meticulous and you’ll be exhausted by the end but it’s well worth it
* to cap it off you’ll glue on a few rhinestones at choice spots
* and a final spray of varnish will seal it all up
* VOILÁ

In this beginner-friendly paint and sip class, you will learn how to create your own masterpiece in the style of the much-loved Symbolist and Vienna Secession artist Gustav Klimt. Using a photo of yourself as inspiration, you’ll recreate yourself in the style of Klimt’s mesmerising portraits.
You’ll learn how to block out shapes on your canvas using your photo as a guide, which will section off and guide your pattern scheme. First, you’ll tackle creating your portrait. This is the centre around which everything will radiate. Then, using combinations of acrylic paint and acrylic paint pens, you’ll layer your canvas with various shapes, lines, and colours. Slowly, they’ll become more complicated and create a dynamic painting that vibrates with you at its centre.
By the end of the class, you can take home your very own portrait in the style of Gustav Klimt.

My name is Angela Ndalianis and I’m a Melbourne-based artist who transitioned to art and painting after nearly 30 years as an academic, where I built a career as a professor of screen media and art history. My scholarly focus is on the sensory ways we connect with art, whether a painting by the artist Gauguin, a horror film by John Carpenter, a VR computer game, or a statue by Bernini.
My work is driven by a passion to experiment with the role of colour, line, texture, and the decorative in art. I favour storytelling practices but also experiment with the sensory power of visual spectacle. I’m also drawn to creating a dialogue between paint and other media, including materials such as rhinestones, embroidery, and rich, textured fabrics.
In the past four years, my paintings have been exhibited at Brunswick Street Gallery, Fly Little Bird, Red Gallery, and Linden New Art Gallery. I’ve exhibited my work at many group and themed shows, including more recently at Linden New Art and Gallery Unbound.
In November 2024, I had my first solo exhibition at Red Gallery titled ‘Divine Darkness: A Female Odyssey’. This show stirred up much excitement and resulted in a second solo show, also at Red Gallery, titled ‘Supremacy of the Zombie Bunny’ in October-November 2025. In 2026, I’ve shown many of my paintings at exhibitions at Unbound Gallery, Linden New Art and the ‘Gods & Monsters’ exhibition at the ALTR Gallery in Minneapolis.
