Join artist Madaline Harris-Schober in this one-day workshop, where participants will paint a medium-sized still life oil painting based on a selection of genuine archaeological artefacts dating from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. These objects come from teaching collections used in excavations and will be available for close observation throughout the day.
The focus of the workshop is on careful analysis, painting from life, and adding a creative flair that further describes the historical object. Rather than producing strict archaeological illustration, the aim is to create an expressive still life that responds to the form, surface, and history. Participants will choose an artefact that interests them and develop a painting to take home.
Madaline Harris-Schober (PhD) is an archaeologist who has worked on excavations in the Middle East and Europe, and research relating to ancient material culture of the Eastern Mediterranean. She will demonstrate a tonal approach to painting, focusing on value, structure, and atmosphere, while encouraging students to bring their own interpretation to the subject.
The day will include:
  • A discussion about the archaeological objects
  • A short demonstration
  • Guided work time
  • Individual feedback
Participants will leave with a finished still life painting and a new way of looking at objects from the ancient world.
Suitable for painters with some basic experience working in oil paint.
Presented as part of Imprint: What Remains, this workshop complements Madaline Harris-Schober's exhibition Ancient Nostalgia: Mourning Paintings That Could Have Been.
What you'll get
A completed artwork
Knowledge required
Basic experience in oil paint required.
What to bring
The following palette:
  • Raw Umber
  • Ivory Black/Lamp Black
  • Titanium White (or any white)
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Cadmium Yellow
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue
  • Gamblin Portland Grey Medium (optional)
  • Naples Yellow (optional)
Any other novelty colours you feel like bringing!
Brushes:
  • Hog hair and synthetic assortment of brushes, at least one big brush (size 10-6), two medium (6-4), and a few smalls.
  • If in doubt, bring them all!
Canvas:
  • Please bring one primed canvas board between the size of 11x13 - 12x16. I will have some canvases available in limited quantities on the day for purchase.
  • If you use entry/student grade canvases, you can prime your canvas with gesso before the session. This will mean your paint will sit better on the canvas (even if the canvas says it has been gesso'd, I would recommend doing it again for the cheaper brands).
Other materials:
  • Solvent - please do not bring Turpentine as it triggers allergies. I recommend Gamsol in a sealed container.
  • Palette of your choice - I alternate between a large wood palette and the New Wave Grey disposable canvas sheets.
  • Linseed/Stand Oil (or whatever medium works best for you).
  • Painters rags and baby wipes
  • Dipper pot/small jar with lid

The VAS art studio occupies an original bluestone building opened in 1874. Though almost totally subsumed by gallery in 1895, it still serves both as a studio and a reminder of our history. Designed by architect Leonard Terry, who had worked principally as a designer of warehouses and banks, it was a single-storey construction without windows.
Since then, the VAS studio has survived extensions, renovations and massive restoration projects to be associated with the careers of some of the most significant artists of Australian history. It is within these walls that young artists including Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder, Tom Roberts, Walter Withers and Frederick McCubbin commenced their journey of brushstrokes. The original floor of Baltic pine, worn by the feet of these artists and coloured with 150 years of paint, still remains alongside original tables and easels.
To this day, the Victorian Artists Society offers classes catering to all experience levels, from beginners to professional artists, in oil, watercolour, acrylic, drawing and sculpture. Classes cover techniques such as portraiture from a life model, landscape and still life. Daytime, afternoon, evening and weekend classes are conducted in the historic VAS Studio and are taught by highly regarded artists.
In addition to our 10 week courses, we also regularly offer workshops and a number of casual sessions including life and portrait.
