Have you got a pile of rejected art on paper lurking in the corner of your studio? It seems a shame to toss that good paper into the green bin. Don’t toss it! Recycle, reuse, and redraw on it.
Bring along any old drawings in any medium (or anything paper-based) and spend the morning (10am–12pm) with Roger turning those rejected works into bespoke, custom, handmade paper. With his portable paper-making setup, he can turn anything that was paper (or card) into fresh sheets of Dodgy paper unique to you!
After lunch, Linda will take you through the techniques of drawing onto Dodgy paper using ink and marker pens. Learn how this unique support reacts to inks, marker pens, and pencils. As part of her Dodgy Melbourne series on exhibition at VAS during the workshop, you will explore city scenes as your drawing theme that afternoon.
The following day, you will play with the paper you have made with Roger, creating and exploring your own themed drawings in ink. Linda will guide you through your selection, assist with composition and drawing techniques to turn your paper remains into new artworks.
Presented as part of Imprint: What Remains, this workshop complements Linda Weil's exhibition Dodgy Melbourne.
What you'll get
Some ink materials and 2 sheets each of Dodgy paper will be supplied by Linda. Additional photographic references will be available. Additional paper can be purchased from Roger at his website before the workshop, or samples from him on the day.

What to bring
Scrap paper. Linda suggests that the best quality scraps or old drawings you have (300gsm, watercolour papers, etc.) will give you the best drawing surface. The original drawing will disappear into the new sheet of paper, giving it unique speckles, colours, and spots to incorporate into the new work. But if you don’t have any old works you want to destroy, any clean paper will create unique sheets. This could be old flyers, books, cartons, whatever you come across. Please make sure your paper is clean, with no grease or dirt.
*Required* Ink pens – Fineliner ink pens in permanent black. Additional ink pens you may want to bring if you already own such as:
  • Black ink fountain pens
  • Black Sharpie or felt-tipped pens
  • Nib pens and dip ink
  • Coloured marker pens of any sort
  • Coloured inks
  • A cool grey marker pen, 20% or 30% cool grey. Linda uses Prismacolor premier marker pens.
  • Watercolour pencils or watercolours with an appropriate brush. Linda uses Aquarelle pencils with an Aquash (water barrel) medium brush.
  • A kneadable eraser (Note, due to the nature of dodgy paper, hard poly or gum erasers destroy the surface of the paper, so only a kneadable eraser can be gently used).
  • A light blue pencil
  • Graphite pencils for sketching
  • A drawing board is recommended.
  • A sketchbook if you like to pre-plan/sketch your ideas out first
  • Photographic references of the subject you wish to draw on the paper you have made.

The VAS art studio occupies an original bluestone building opened in 1874. Though almost totally subsumed by gallery in 1895, it still serves both as a studio and a reminder of our history. Designed by architect Leonard Terry, who had worked principally as a designer of warehouses and banks, it was a single-storey construction without windows.
Since then, the VAS studio has survived extensions, renovations and massive restoration projects to be associated with the careers of some of the most significant artists of Australian history. It is within these walls that young artists including Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder, Tom Roberts, Walter Withers and Frederick McCubbin commenced their journey of brushstrokes. The original floor of Baltic pine, worn by the feet of these artists and coloured with 150 years of paint, still remains alongside original tables and easels.
To this day, the Victorian Artists Society offers classes catering to all experience levels, from beginners to professional artists, in oil, watercolour, acrylic, drawing and sculpture. Classes cover techniques such as portraiture from a life model, landscape and still life. Daytime, afternoon, evening and weekend classes are conducted in the historic VAS Studio and are taught by highly regarded artists.
In addition to our 10 week courses, we also regularly offer workshops and a number of casual sessions including life and portrait.
