Understand the cutting edge

Understand the Cutting Edge

Understand what a sharp edge really is, how bevel geometry affects the way a tool cuts, and how to recognise what is happening at the edge.

Explore different sharpening methods

Explore Different Sharpening Methods

Compare different approaches to grinding, sharpening and honing. We’ll look at paper based systems, stones, guides and powered systems from bench grinders to the Tormek, with an emphasis on understanding their strengths rather than prescribing one particular system.

Develop a reliable sharpening practice

Develop a Reliable Sharpening Practice

Learn to establish, refine and maintain an edge efficiently and repeatably. Develop the practical skills to diagnose problems and get your chisels and plane irons working properly.

Put the edge to work

Put the Edge to Work

Use your freshly sharpened tools and learn to recognise how a good edge should feel and perform in the wood. Take away a sharpening practice you can use to keep your own chisels and plane irons working properly.

Sharpening is a gateway drug for fine woodworking.
But "sharp enough" depends on what you are doing. A chisel used for delicate paring has different demands from one used for chopping a mortise; a smoothing plane asks something different of its edge from a tool doing heavier work.
This one-day class focuses on sharpening chisels and plane irons, and on developing the judgement to know what a good edge looks and feels like, how to achieve it reliably, and how to maintain it efficiently.
We’ll explore the principles behind sharpening as well as a range of techniques and sharpening media. You’ll learn about preparing the backs of tools, establishing and maintaining bevels, grinding and honing, and recognising when an edge needs attention.
There are many stones, systems, angles, jigs, and gadgets available to woodworkers. This class isn’t about converting you to one particular system. Instead, you’ll develop an understanding of what is happening at the cutting edge so you can evaluate different approaches and find a sharpening practice that works for you.
The workshop is practical and hands-on. All sharpening stones and equipment are provided, and you are welcome to bring your own chisels and plane irons so we can look at their condition and discuss what they need.
The class is suitable for beginners as well as more experienced woodworkers wanting to improve the consistency of their sharpening. With a maximum of four participants, there is plenty of opportunity for individual guidance.
The aim is simple: to leave with a sharpening method you understand, can repeat, and can adapt to the work you want to do.

I’m a furniture maker, designer, artist and educator, and I’ve been making and teaching for more than 25 years. My practice has always been grounded in a fascination with wood — not simply as a material, but as something that grows, responds to its place and carries its life story into the things we make.
I’ve taught furniture making and woodworking in many different settings, including Sturt School for Wood, Queensland College of Art, the JamFactory, WoodDust, the Maleny Wood Expo, Lomandra Place Studios, The Cooroora Institute and the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine. These days I teach from Moonlite Studios, the workshop I share with my partner Karla in Mount Egerton, regional Victoria.
What I enjoy most about teaching is helping people understand with their hands and their heads, and discover how they can grow their skills with what they have. Woodworking can sometimes be taught as a collection of rules and techniques, or as a prepared experience with no real learning involved. I’m much more interested in giving people enough understanding of tools, materials and processes to grow from where they are and make good decisions about how to work with this fabulous material.
That might mean learning to sharpen and use a hand plane, to safely use a machine, to design and make a “simple box” or even a chair, or exploring how we can persuade wood to bend. But it might also mean understanding how trees grow and what that means for how we make things, what the provenance of our material might teach us, or how to tell meaningful stories with what we make.
My own practice moves between furniture, sculpture, photography, sound and experimental work with wood and other biological materials. That breadth feeds back into the workshop: Moonlite Studios is a place where serious craft skills and curiosity can comfortably coexist.
Classes are deliberately small, inclusive, safe and supportive. You don’t need to arrive already knowing what you’re doing — just willing to pay attention, have fun, ask questions and learn to make things
